I almost bought one, but couldn't really come up with a reason that I wanted a portable - though you may have other needs. When I had it in my hand, it was harder to handle in the truck than a mic. So I looked at buying a decent external mic, but that kicked the price of the system into a spot that I wasn't comfy with, so I backed away from the option and ended up with the 75WSXT which I'm really happy with.

thanks. the thing is, i dont want to install a whole cb unit considering i wheel once in a while, not all the time.

so i wanna get a handheld and (as i read around the board) do what some people do and hook it to an external antenna mounted on my roof...

hmm.. im gonna have to do more research i guess.

Portables are great for a spotter if you have a mobile in the truck. My portable is a single channel from fadio shack, about $15 and only works line of sight, but thats all I need.

All portables in the under $100 range are going to offer near exact performance, and eat up batteries. Midland makes a unit that can be used as either a portable or mobile, look into that maybe.

Good luck.

is there a particular model from midland thats good?

i dont care about battery life, i get cheap batteries from a friend, so i can keep plenty on hand whenever i wheel.

I know you already know my views on the matter but I second the Cobra 75wxst, it is easily hidden but convenient to use. You should ask everyone which they prefer (handheld or non-handheld) and see what sort of responses you get, I could be wrong.
