it has power only when the truck is on...its wired into one of the fuses. its a cobra from walmart...I forget which model...

Right now it doesnt have an antenna on it, but my wheelin buddies were close enough that I would pick up....do you think that it might be losing there signal and then jumping or no...

channel 9 is the universal emergency channel. i betcha you have something set where it defaults to ch 9.

read your manual

if you have 2 hot wires, one is red, one is orange.. one is for a constent hot, the other is for memory..
dont quote me on this part. the ORANGE is constent hot (for the memory), the RED is the power, to turn off with the key.
hope this helps.

now is this a cb you just installed? Has it worked before w/o this same problem?

my cb has a channel lock. perhaps that is what's preventing you from using other channels

no...Ive had it for a little while, and yes it has worked without this problem before. It will change channels, but only for 5-10 seconds, and I can talk on them, but when I let off the mic, it goes to 9. I know thats the emergency channel, but Im wondering if its, like you said, on some default mode or if its messed up....i dont have a clue why it would keep jumping like that.

yeah, it does sound like a program/setting issue.

The wiring advice already posted is probably more of an issue, but I know some radios have a switch to go directly to Channel 9 for emergency. See if it has such a switch, I had a Cobra that had it. And as ToeferUOP said, definitely dont key up with no antenna. Good luck. And if you can't fix it, take it back to Wal Mart because they guarantee customer satisfaction.

Actually it unloads the transmit section and burns out the power transistor in the output stage, but modern hardware often has protection against this.
