CB mounted in the ashtray slot - Need some advice

I've been researching CBs lately, and I'm leaning towards purchasing a CB that mounts in the ashtray slot location. I know there are at least a dozen or so members here who have done this, but I'm curious as to how it was done.

I know there are very unconventional (and by unconventional, I mean jerry-rig) ways to mount it, but I did not know if there was a universal mount that would suffice or some uniform way of doing it? I am sure there is trimming involved to make it fit, but how much trimming is needed?

If anyone has pictures of their CB installed in the ashtray slot, please post them. I would like to see how you made it fit and what the finished product looks like mounted.

you just have to cut some plastic out of the back because the CB is deeper than the ashtray.

i used velcro to hold it in place but it fits in there pretty tightly without it.

i have this one: http://www.midlandradio.com/comersus...idProduct=4334

I used 2 large hose clamps to hold mine in. Works great, and you can barely see it.

I have the same unit as Marc P above. Works very well. If memory serves, I just Dremeled out the back of the ashtray holder, and bolted the factory CB bracket (included with CB) to the underside of the ashtray slot.

Looks like this:

I was able to keep the underside of the dash intact. I like the Uniden 510 XL... almost like it's made to fit right in there.

Yeah garrett1478, that's the model I was looking at. I've got a friend of a friend who can get me that model brand new for $30.00. (This being the main reason I wanted to further research the ashtray mounting point.)

Thanks guys, those pics are helping!

Yeah, you're right. After seeing pictures of others, I might not go this route.

I think the Cobra 75 is slowly becoming the CB of choice for my setup.

Thanks for the advice/pictures everyone.

I will be doing this since my other CB crapped out. I plan to use the same model, I have the unit and have done my calculations. On a 3rd gen it is possible to mount the CB flush if you remove or move the factory amp. I will be going with an Alpine HU at the same time, so that will not be an issue.

Yeah, if I planned to ditch my factory HU, I'd definitely get the model that mounts in the empty din below it. The Cobra 18 I believe fits there. For my setup though, I'm keeping the factory HU.

Post up some pics when you're done. I'd like to see your overall setup when you have it all installed.
