stereo without HU? will it work?

they dont make a after market stereo that fits in place of the stock one in my 81. i dotn want to hack apart the dash to get one installed because i dont listen to the radio. between sirius and my ipod, radio listening is very limited. so why install in a Head Unit just to use the aux in?

so my thought was i get new speakers (something will will take the power) and a 200 watt amp that has a remote gain control. then run the input of the amp to a mini plug to plug into the headphone jack or the audio out on my sirius. then run it to the speakers. i can then use the remote gain control and the volume control on the sat/ipod to control the volume.

if that works, can i then splice the factory radio speaker wires into the speakers so that on the off chance that i do want to listen to the radio, it still works, i'd just have to make sure the amp and sat/ipod are turned off.

all this works fine in my head, i just want to see if the stereo gurus out there will tell me otherwise.

yeah man, that should work fine doing it like you said, as i can't see why it wouldn't...i say go for it, as you'd be saving a good bit of money by not having to buy a head unit...
