Well I have broke down and order an Alpine 7894 head unit, kicker kx600.1 amp, one Image Dynamics 12" dvc 2 ohm sub, and a .88 cu ft sealed enclosure for it to go in. The head unit is in the dash, the amp and sub should be in tomorrow, but the enclosure won't be in till sometime next week Any of you who have subs, did you fill the box with some sort of insulation? I was debating on whether to do this or not. Any suggestions? Hopefull this amp will fit under the drivers seat, but if not I'm not sure where I'm gonna stick it Man that really sucks that my enclosure won't be in until next week, well at least I'll have everything else ready to go!

 

I’m not the expert here but I’m pretty sure its needs to be filled with just air (nothing but sub and box)... I cant explain it, but I just bought some Boston acoustics 965 and its sub is "sealed" in a box with just air (something about resonation), the more “air” the better the resonation or sound.. furk, I think…

 

ok subs use air but when limited space is avaiale you have to trick the sub into thinking it is in a larger enclosure 99.9% of all manufatures recomend apolyfill stuffed enclosure size for there subs. the poly fill makes the enclosure internal air slow down like it would in a larger enclosure thus giving a more accurate sound and remove any internal resonating frequencies. usualy the industrial standard it 1-1.5 lbs of polyfill for every 1cubic ft.
so it would be better to fill the box with the stuffing,
a good place to get it is from a cheap pillow.

Check this speaker building site. I've been buying stuff from them for years. Speaker builders swear by lambs wool for damping material. If you open a home speaker, chances are you'll find lambs wool inside.

It's listed under "wool" on this site.

The speaker manufacturer will have specs on how much stuffing to use. Good luck with the install.

If the amp doesn't fit under the seat, you might be able to mount it to the box...

 

I didn't really want to mount it on the box b\c I kinda wanted it to be out of view. I'm thinking about installing it in one of the side panels in the back. If I go that route, I'll end up cutting some holes for some 80mm pc case fans I guess I'll have to find a place here local that might care some of the "wool". I'll prob need around 1/2 lb or a little more.

 

I've always used Polyfil in my boxes. I'm sure lambs wool works great too. Anything to stop the reflected waves from occurring inside the box. Just like the other poster said, it also makes the box act like a bigger box.

Also, if you are installing this yourself, remember to bolt, lock, weld, whatever that box to your truck. I had a custom built box in an old car and put a couple of screws just to hold it down and it was gone a month after it was all installed.

Nothing is going to make it totally theft proof, but make it as hard as you can.

I have two amps. One mounted under the driver seat and the other one is under the passenger seat. I have a 99 4 Runner. I don't know how big that amp is, though.

Data - let us know how you like the Alpine and if you run into the buzz at low volume issue. I don't think it is a major issue, but curious if you hear it; some hear it, some don't.

Are you running the internal app on that head unit as well as your other amp (s)?

Post a pic if you can, would like to see how it looks. That head unit is my next purchase

 

Nope haven't heard the hum yet! Yeah I'm just gonna use the internal amp in the head unit for my mids and highs right now. Alpine even suggested hooking this unit up straight to the battery via 10 gauge cable, so I'm assuming the amp in it is pretty powerful. I'll be sure to snap some pics for ya tomorrow morning. I'm waking up extra early....I've got a long day ahead of me tomorrow! Well off to bed

 

its TONS better than stock... and mine gets hella hot! so its got to be doing something right!

 

Well I got everything installed over this weekend. I still haven't got my sub box in yet :mad: I will probalby end up calling them tomorrow sometime. I found out a neat little feature of my Alpine head unit. It comes with two built in crossovers. One for Low pass (sub output) and a High pass (for preamp outs to the subs and for front and rear speakers.) I thought for a second I was gonna have to install bass blockers to my mids and highs, but with the push of a button or two I can have it all crossed over. If anyone is looking for a head unit I would suggest the Alpine 7894.

The only drawback to this headunit is the fact that you have to run 10 guage wire to your battery for this sucker b\c it has a built in Alpine V Drive amp in it max output of 60x4. But other than that this sucker r0x!!!

 

while we're on the subject of speakers/subs, my speaker in the back right passenger door is vibrating. it's not blown because when you take the door off it sounds fine, what the heck can I do to make it stop????? It bothers me, but it only acts up when I have to volume up on high
