I took a look at a runner in a yard yesterday... I can't believe they only put an itty bitty 4" back there... it looks like you could fit a 5x7 fairly easily and you could trim out the rest of the grill and have a completely stock appearance, but don't hold me to it I did not pull the panel off to see what was behind.

sorry about that greenflames. this is almost on topic..

i know what you mean about those 4's. today, i pulled the panel off and decided to go with external housings..but i broke off about 6 of the grommets holding the panel on . do you know anywhere i could purchase another cargo side panel?

i bought some cheap 6x9's at walmart to use while i wait for my pioneers to come in. it was a BIG step up from the puny 4's that are there. those cheap things far over-power the stock 4's up front. not bad. i'd recommend it!

ok on my 4runner (1990) i can see at least 6 spots for speakers. like jeeze. thats alot of sound.

What is mounted in the rear top section, right at teh back above the rear window??? looks like a mounting location for speakers??? but there are also grilles on the rear side panels?? which one is it?

Depending on the year/option package of your runner those are either vents or grills for component tweeters.
The ones on the side over the wheels wells are factory speakers and the ones right aft are body vents.
