IPOD - analog vs digital output

I am shopping for headunits for my 4Runner and I really like the Pioneer unit in my other car. If I buy a Pioneer for the 4Runner, I will have two options for connecting my IPOD:

Pioneer CD-IB100 - $140 OUCH!

Pioneer IP-Bus adapter - $34

-OR-

I can save money on the headunit by buying something like this Sony CDX-GT300 for $149; it has an AUX IN port already built-in without having to buy anything else and the deck matches my black stereo bezel nicely:

Is it true that the headphone jack on the IPOD delivers an analog signal while use of the dock connector on the bottom provides digital sound? Will I notice a difference?

I friend of mine that builds computers told me that headphone jacks are an analog signal. I can tell you this, and I hope it helps. Whenever I got my new Alpine HU I took my older JVC out and put it in my wife's truck. I also got her the Delphi Roady 2 for christmas last year. The JVC has the aux. input mini-headphone jack connection so I just got a male-male set of headphone jacks and hooked it up. Sounds Great! I just hooked up a Sony HU and the direct Terk connections for a buddy couple weeks ago, so it's digital and I cannot tell a difference between his and my wifes. Niether have any high end speakers, just HU on the factory stuff. Maybe with some aftermarket stuff you could tell a difference. Hope this helps ya!

Yeup!

Will I notice a difference?
In the truck? no way. At home through a good receiver & set of speakers? Possibly, it depends on your ear.

but it doesn't matter... BUY CHRIS'S!

I have a Alpine that needed the converter cable also which was $25 so I just went with that since the clickwheel on the iPod is still the thing to use to go through your library (mine's over 4000 songs right now) over your HU's rotary control.

I also have the iPod connected to a Belkin charger/amp ($35) which has it's own volume control which makes it easier to match your HU's volume control. Mine sounds great even if the sound quality is below that of using the actual CD but you don't really notice it.

Okay, change of plans.

This is the pioneer headunit I have installed in my Supra:

It's a Pioneer DEH-P440. I will remove it and install it in the 4Runner. If Chris' CD-IB100 is compatible with this particular headunit, I may buy it from him. (Does it charge the IPOD too? Can you still use the clickwheel when the IPOD is connected to it, or do I have to use my HU controls?)

Here's the gem that's going in the Supra--it's the old AM/FM tape deck from my 1994 SR5 V6 truck, which has the exposed plug on the back for the separate CD player. There is a hack online that shows which pinout to use on the back of the deck to allow an IPOD connection. Granted, it's a tape deck, but I will never need a CD player when I have all my music on the I-POD. I rarely listen to music in that car anyways, quite frankly I would rather listen to the turbo. Done, no money spent other than Chris' adapter...

As far as I can tell, my adapter isn't compatible with that head unit. According to Pioneer's web page on that adapter, it lists these head units as compatible:

• AVIC-N2, AVIC-D1, AVH-P7500DVD, AVH-P6600DVD, AVH-P5700DVD, DVH-P5000MP
• DEH-P9600MP, DEH-P8600MP, DEH-P80MP, DEH-P7700MP, DEH-P6700MP, DEH-P4700MP, DEH-P3700MP, FH-P5000MP, FH-P4200MP, DEH-P77DH, DEH-P47DH
• DEX-P9, DEH-P960MP, DEH-P860MP, DEH-P8MP, DEH-P770MP, DEH-P670MP, and DEH-P470MP
• “External Unit” Compatibility with many additional Pioneer Headunit and AV Receiver models.

What I'm not sure about is the last option... "External Unit" Compatability. I'm not sure if this means the adapter will work with older models, but won't let the head unit control the model but rather restore control to the iPod itself. I'm going to look into that more and I'll let you know what I've found.

As far as your other questions go:
-Yes, it'll charge the iPod
-If you're using a head unit that's compatible, you have to control the iPod through the HU. Otherwise, it may return control to the iPod itself. I'll search around and see what I can find.

I run this Alpine headunit

And for 14.97, I picked up this wire for my iPod. Just plugs into the back of the headunit where the cd changer plugs into. Allows you to run your iPod thru the headunit, but you get to control all iPod commands thru the iPod itself. Very pleased with it. http://www.myradiostore.us/auxadapte...lp-ai-35m.html

Churd--I found out that my deck is not compatible with the CD-IB100...thanks though. I guess that leaves me with the analog $34 adapter pictured above.

EWAYota--I like that Alpine HU and the fact that IPOD capability is only $15 away.

I'm hoping to start the stereo-related stuff this weekend.

It will work... just not as advertised. You'll have control of the iPod directly through the iPod itself... not the head unit. The benefit being you'll have a fully digital signal vs. analog through the other adapter.

Analog vs digital isn't really noticeable since you are listening to slightly reduced digital quality of a compressed CD file. My friend has the digital hookup with his Pioneer HU vs mine and you can't tell the difference.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the Pioneer IP-Bus adapter ($38 shipped to my door) and will be using the Pioneer DEH-P440 that is currently in my other car. Next month I will probably act on the Infiniti Basslink II groupbuy. I also ordered a DIN-sized Cobra 18 WX ST II CB that I hope to install below the Pioneer--my only concern is whether or not the flip-down face the Pioneer will still operate with the CB directly below it. We'll know in two weeks!

The Supra will be downgraded to a Toyota tape deck with the IPOD hack...who needs a CD player when you have an IPOD? Further, who needs a stereo when you have an inline-6 with a big turbo?

Exactly;I haven't used my CD player since Christmas as I filled up my iPod with about 90% of my CDs with about 7gb left for new stuff plus I have a $50 iTunes store gift card to use.

Will I need some sort of installation kit to install the Pioneer in my dash? I'm hoping the factory L-brackets will work...

You MIGHT need a metra pocket, but I kinda doubt it. The part number is met 88008000 and is about 17.99 at your local CC. (If you dont need it but have a pocket, you will notice 2 little bungs sticking up into the OEM radio from the factory pocket - those bungs need to be ground or cut off.) The harness is going to be either a met 801761 or a met 808112 and are about 16 bux at your local CC. Also you radio in the 4runner is ISO mounted (just like the supra should be) instead of being DIN mounted so youll need those 4 screws to anchor the radio to the two brackets.

Personally if your HU were compatable with the ipod adapter I'd go that route not the minijack. You will hear a difference if you change out speakers and put a 4 channel on them. Not only that but that 140 dollar unit also charges the ipod for you. (And they can be found on Ebay for quite cheap)

turbo whistle = music to anyones ears!

(well unless you have a nasty headache and you are driveing a powerstroke 6.0 for 4 hours whose whistle just makes it worse....lol)

Speaking of that, the turbo on our powerjoke is wierd - at moderate boost (~10psig) is whistles about 4x louder then when its at full boost (~26psig)

I bought the Alpine adapter for my iPod video 60gig which i ended up returning, it takes away the ability to play video and navigate through iPod itself. Stupid logo displays on my iPod that says "///Alpine" then I have to use my remote to navigate through songs. After realizing that I've just wasted my time with this thing, I then bought those AiNet-to-RCA then hooked it up. Much better setup because I can. It sounds awesome when I play movies in my car!!

Any sound difference you will hear would mostly come from the difference in DA converters in the ipod and the stereo you buy, and I have no idea which one is better or if it's even possible to notice a difference there. The AUX in jack is most probably meant for high-level input (past the pre-amp stage of the stereo, which is the most critical one), so I'm pretty sure you wouldn't lose any sound quality by going with the Sony.
