I have an Alpine HU that I plan to install in my 4rnr, its a 2004 model. I never cleaned the laser inside the deck, do those disc with brushes really work? Anybody have a better solution?

I have a cleaning dics by Maxell with the brushes and it is good for removing the dust that can stick to the lens and it's rejuvenated my brother's and my PS2 several times after it wouldn't read a disc and a PS2 that somebody gave me after they thought it was dead and it was just a dusty lens. I run the disc through my Alpine every 3-4 months just to make sure the lens stays clean.

If it ain't broke then don't fix it.

Also I'd talk to more repair facilities before ever using one of those cd's with the brushes on them. The fear of scratching the lens is the only reason why I've never used one.

Just so you know, there is a lube on the CD lens. It is there mainly to protect the lens if the lens was to ever hit the cd when hitting a bump or something else. As soon as you put in a brush-cd, it takes away that lube and will/might scratch the lens. That being said, take the stereo to BestBuy and have them do a cleaning on the stereo. It's $45 and its warranteed. They will also adjust/lube anything else that may need it.

I've been using the brush CD on my CD players and both PS1 and PS2 for over 10 years with no ill effects and the PS2 is usually the one that has issues with reading discs but after a quick spin with the brush it works fine.

Now that I have the iPod in the car the CD player rarely sees action.

ps1/ps2/any other interior cd player (Home theater, computers, etc) do not have this lubricant. It is only on automotive/marine CD players. Ones that are susceptable to bumps, anti skip, etc. I have seen the scratches first hand, so it does happen.

I agree, don't try anything if it is still working.

A good way to clean out the CD player so that the lens won't get dirty is to take a can of CO2 (mainly used for cleaning computers and stuff) to it. I do this every once in a while, and my mom has been doing it ever since she got the CD player (about 3 years ago) and it has worked fine without any problems.
