Higher amp Alternator

I know its been covered a thousand times but I've searched quite a bit....but can anyone point me in the direction of a reputable place that sells higher amp alternators to accomodate a system on a 3vz?

why bother with it? Aren't you still planning on putting in a 305 in a couple months?

I have a 190amp unit that worked flawlessly for 3 years and just recently died. during it's life I beat the SNOT out of it. DEFINATELY going to go back to Rick to get it rebuilt...

You might also want to consider Powermaster h/o alternators at http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/

Not sure if they have exact drop-in replacements, but you could probably modify a bracket slightly to fit. If you are going to drop in a 305 or any other SBC, you could probably save some $$$ and get the generic GM alternator so you could bolt-on to your new motor when you drop it in.

If it has to be a direct replacement, you may want to consider getting a rebuilt/rewound stock alternator. You probably won't be able to get HUGE increases, but for a moderate increase in output w/o having to redline your engine to get the output, that might be another route.

Depends on what kind of output you are looking for. If you are looking for maximum, no-holds-barred output, you may want to check out Leece-Neville for competition alternators, or dual alternators.

Hope this helps,

Merlin

you should NEVER have to redline your engine to get max output from ANY alt, this is why their pully is so much smaller than the crank pully...without measuring and actually figuring it out, on a toyota, i'd take a wager that the alt is turning ~3x faster than your engine.

This is true - forgot about that (D'OH). Thanks for bringing that bit up about the pullies.
Ahhh... one of the benefits of old age and a 2 year-old. Don't know which one is worse for my memory.

Aloha,

@Bumpin' Yota: Did you just simply replace the stock alternator with one with bigger output? Any other modifications you did to your car to acommodate the bigger alt.? TIA.

I'm looking into one of these for a dual battery set up. On a scale of 1 - 10, what kind of job is it to replace it? Probably a good time to do the belt, too, huh?

the case was a little bigger than the OEM, but still def a toyota alt. No changes, the HO Alt just bolted right in and plugged in like the OEM one.

As far as mods to support it, new belts, 1/0 from the charging post to the battery, then I did my own grounding kit with 1/0.

I have a FIPK kit on my truck from KN, so for me to change the alt takes about 20 minutes from vehicle running to it running again. With the OEM intake, you are prolly looking at about 45 min or so. (you have to take off the whole intake and all of the silencer boxes, then you've got TONS of room.) As far as changing the belts, thats a whoooole bucket-o-fun! You'll have to take off the powersteering belt first, then the ACcompressor belt next, before you can get to the alternator belt. hehe

So you can change the alternator without removing the belts? Oh -- I have plenty of room -- the entire air box is gone and modified. In fact, that's the spot I'm going to put the second battery. I just need to find someone to fab an intake pipe for me to re-route the intake up toward the firewall (like Cebby was going to do).

Of the HO installed? No, but I do have pics of the OEM one installed now. As far as outward appearances they are the same when installed. the HO alt just has different cooling openings in the case. Ill take a pic of it tomorrow for ya vs the oem in there now.

I also learned why one does not over tighten the tightening nut on the bottom of the alternator. One set of Helicoils later Im much much wiser with my application of torque! lol

Yep I got the over tightened bottom adjuster just broke blues too...I just put a bolt and nut in front of it so it would stay tight until I can yank it out to helicoil it!

that's actually about standard for any of the alternator companies that specifically design alts for audio systems....

Ohio Generator would be about the same and good luck finding a Powermaster that has a 200amp toy alt.

I can get an entire engine for that price! What a freakin racket -- sounds like there needs to be some more competition in that business, 'cause there's no way it cost 4x as much in material as a stock alternator.

OK, so I'm not planning to use the alternator for running a massive audio system, just a bank of 4 100w Hella 500's and for a winch I don't even own yet. I plan to have a dual battery configuration set up this weekend. How bad do I need a HO alternator? Is there a good compromise between a stock replacement (mine is toast and I need to get one, anyways) and the bend-me-over-dry-drill-me-in-the-pooper prices of a HO alternator?

Ed

I looked into a higher amp anternator and I just couldn't justify the high price of getting a modified Denso. So I went to the dark side and bought a 190 amp Delco CS144. It required a few washers to fit into the saddle mount and I had to pick up a longer tensioner bracket at the junk yard. Wiring it wasn't too hard since I bought it off eBay with a pigtail.
