Mr. Alternator brand HO alternators are about $200.

And not very reliable from a few posts I've seen. Can anyone comment on the quality coming from that shop recently? Have things improved at all?

Churned had good review as I recall. I plan on getting one somewhat soon.

BTW- Are you going to upgrade your 500's, because they are 55 watt lights, not 100s. You could run 210 watts extra all day (and night) long on the stock system, probably even 400 watts.

My last 4Runner had an Advanced Auto 80 amp unit and I had 620 watts of aux lighting.

I'll eventually upgrade the Hella's to at least a pair of LightForce. I just want to do everything right the first time and set the stage properly for the future mods. However, there is a point of diminishing returns and $200 or so is my limit for the utility I'd get out my alternator right now. Any more expensive and I'd probably wait.

Well, I ended up paying $170 for the stocker from an auto parts store when I fried mine in some mud water. I wish I had known I was going to because for just a few more bucks I could have got the HO model, but I could not wait for it to be made and shipped.

I will be sure to post up about the Mr. Alternator unit (in my build-up thread) when I get it and have some time to test it out.

Well, I called Mr. Alternator today and talked with Steve (owner?) and asked him a few questions. I think it will be the appropriate one to go with for my needs. I mentioned that a few members on our board have has issues with them failing prematurely and he was unaware of any unresolved customer service issues or instances where the alternator crapped out due to defective parts. I decided to take the chance and give him a shot, so be certain -- I'll have a report one way or another over the next year or so.
