Component speakers

I'm planning on ordering Boston Acoustics Rally component speakers tomorrow and wanted to know if anyone has them.

Is there a big difference between component speakers and the stock ones?

I had the rallys but the older style from Boston. They are crisp and sound great. but for the price Id say go with Diamond Audio hex seperates (I would recomend the new Rockfords, but havent heard them yet. Thier design is awsome and should produce some good sound.) Right now Im pumping 150watts to mine, and the gain is all the way down. When I turn it up the tweeters can out scream my DB sub......But if you want the Bostons, try to max out the wattage on them. Most component setups, should be run off amps. But if you plan to run it off the stock deck just go with the entry level m3 from Diamond if you got the tweeter whole in the stock door. But if you got nothing, go with the Eclpise co-axils.

There is a HUGE difference between the stock speakers and any set of component speakers - and B. A. does make some nice ones. The most important thing is that you get proper imaging with the component speakers - if you just throw them in anywhere they won't fill their potential and may actually sound worse than stock.

You may also find that you need an amplifier to get decent sound out of them. I don't know what your stock stereo system is rated at, but the B. A. rallys will sound best with a bit of power behind them.

Speaker improvements are the #1 thing you can do to improve the quality of the sound that you get. While different head units may have slightly better sensitivity, or a higher signal to noise ratio, those differences are nothing compared to the difference between a set of factory speakers with paper whizzer cones and a set of properly driven aftermarket speakers.

If you want a good deck Eclipse has one of the best on the market to date. Just stay away from their in dash DVD combo (the one that has the pop out screen). Most of their mid line can blow away the other brands that cost 2x as much. Also Rockford put out a decent product this year with thier MP3 decks and all.

Like the guys said above, the deck determines sound quality. Right now I have a crappy deck, the silver Panasonic deck with all thoes animations. I want to grab the mid line eclipse deck.

I have the diamond audio hex 6" component system. Wow, never heard better car speakers. Boston's are nice too, a little to tinny for my taste though.
Even some POS jensen speakers are probably better than stock..

Also check out CDT Audio at theZEB.com. Very nice speakers and they're only $150 shipped right now.

I just installed a set of Infinity 6" seperates. I also have a Kenwood head unit and Kenwood amp under the drivers seat.
The Infinity's sound incredible. They are amazingly crisp and clear. I have the crossover for the seperates set at -3db for the tweeters, and the highs are still incredibly crisp. I would suggest doing that for anyone not playing stuff like classical music. because most radio and new music has enough highs and you will have to turn down the treble to stand it. then you the mids will be turned down too low.
Place the tweeters high in the car, like either on the top of the doors, or on the A-pillars (by the windshield). Then you get the clear highs without having to turn the treble way up and messing up the sound balance.

My seperates are in the doors, with the tweeters low on the doors, but this is because I also have Cerwin Vega 4" seperates in the dash, and those tweeters are going on top of the A-pillars.
I am trying to find a good set of Intinity 6" seperates for the rear of the truck. they will go in the side panels of the rear seat. I am making new sides and putiing in sound deadening.
My last paroject will be to make the sub inclosures theat will fit in the side walls behind the roll bar. I am putting a 8" on one side and a 10" on the other. I am not just wanting THUMP from my system, but excellent all around clear sound.
I will post pics of my system when I can

Also placing the tweeters high will help bring the sound stage up.

This in effect will make the sound appear to be coming more from your windshield area rather you feet.

You'll get decreased imaging with this setup though. With any speakers up high, the lentgh the sound travels is very different between the two, and you won't hear the recording as the engineer intended.
Best solution here is a set of custom kick panels, aimed very precisely, and then some lower powered (so you can't hear them much) tweeters in the door pods. The IASCA competition CD's are great for this, I used it to set mine up.

Probably a little more than most would want to do, but in my opinion, worth it.

The human ears hear " left and right ".... not " up and down ".

Owls have that capability though. (one ear is higher up than the other)

thats why the kick panels work so well, close your eyes and try it.

FWIW:
we used to put fake grills or non-functioning tweeters in the dash area, to see if ppl would say about how great they made the imaging feel. haha.
