4th gen audio upgrades write ups ?
Hey all,
Sorry for the repeat questions but my hard drive crashed and I lost all my links.
I am starting to upgrade the JBL stuff in the 4th gen and someone had a great write up.
I am looking to get info on...
1. Whats the hot set up for the front doors ???
2. Max size on rear doors.
3. High quality dash kit to let me use a DIN size head unit in the dash.
Thanks again,
David
Thanks

David,
Do you have the JBL 10-speaker setup ? If so, it's gonna be a lot more work than simply changing out the speakers... In fact, I found that the speaker quality was much higher than the head unit/amp could support.
What I found is that you can swap practically everything out on the stereo, but it WILL cost you some $$... Better start with a budget and work from there.

I have the ten speaker set up with rear audio.
I have a nice Rosen rear DVD/flip down monitor that works really well with the
factory rear audio and FM modulator...I can run DVD's in back with the factory wirless headphones on FM while running CD's up front at the same time.
I discovered that the factory sub is actually a half decent 8" dual voice coil unit that actually works much better with a little more power. I also tried a JL Audio Sub in the factory enslosure (0.42 cu feet...trust me on this, I filled it with water and it was 12 litres which is 0.42 cu ft). Trouble was at decent power levels, everything resonated too bad so it was easier if not as clean to go for a new custom built MDF enslosure that does rob me of a little cargo space....so I am gonna go all in.
Here is what I have on the bench waiting to go in.
Clarion HX-D10 Limited Head Unit
4V pre-outs, on board HP/LP filters, non fading 4V sub output, twin 16 bit d/a converters , on board Sirius controls. Pre amp ONLY output
Clarion 625 Ae net changer
Clarion SIRCL1 Sirius interface
Rosen DVD/Flip down monitor with FM modulator package
Clarion electronic active xover with remote bass control
JL Audio 500/1 sub amp
JL Audio 300/4 mid/high amp ( will bi-wire front door speakers)
Kicker L7 Dual Voice coil 2 ohm Sub
I am looking for the front stage at :
JL Audio XR650CS
Boston (of course) (not Rally)
Diamond Hex
CDT HD 62
I don't like MB Quart as I find hem too bright and way to tiring on long drives, some POLK are good but same issue, Boston and Diamonds are so smooth.
I like the JL and Diamond options as they come with optional mid base units for the rear doors driven off the front stage cross over that make it a 3 way component system
I am having the rear bass enclosure custom built as a 0.8 cu ft down firing sealed enclosure that fits under the rear split luggage tray that I have.
I know everyone always talks up Boston but $500 is a lot of bones for front stage...I can get the Diamonds and the JL's at under $300 which leaves $200 for mid base or rear fill.
Some dude had a real neat write up on cutting adapter panels out of MDF to take 6 1/2's in the front 6x 8 opening etc.
I may have to go waay back and keep searching.
Thanks
David

Holy crap Batman ! You ARE going full-zoot ! I'll be interested in your outcome with that Clarion HU.
The thread you are looking for is by Impulsbrklyn. Chris re-did the speakers in his 4th Gen, fabbing up some brackets out of MDF so he could fit round 6.5" speakers in his front door openings.
Since you are going all out, don't skimp on power, either... Do it right, with good power cables/connectors/speaker wire and you'll be a happy (and thumpin') driver !
Good luck !

I had the Clarion in the 99 and loved it.... including the silly man chasing camel screensaver !!!
The guys at the local ICE store reckon it out performs pretty much anything this side of the $5k Alpine and Nakamichi's !!!
The L7 worked great in the 99 and I still have the 2 guage power wire, fuse and 4 way fuse distribution box for the amps. I can run 4 guage to the amps from their.
Ground was 2 guage...
