2nd gen antenna switch?

Hey guys, hopin you can help me out. Ive got a 91 4runner, with a new pioneer deck in it. My problem is that with my new deck, any time the stereo is playing the radio OR a cd, up goes the power antenna. So i add a switch in to let me choose when the antenna goes up, only problem is that when i have the antenna down, the stock rear amps dont kick on, and i get no sound out of the back. I have tried about 5 different wires now, including the constant power on @ the antenna relay (blue w/ yellow stripe), black with orange stripe, grey, pink w/ blue stripe, AND the blue wire @ the stereo wiring harness, and i cant seem to figure out which darn wire i can switch to control ONLY the antenna. So, can you guys help a brother out, anybody who has done this? Thanks a ton.

Stock rear amp? If you have a new deck, I would not use the stock amp (you mean the one under the radio in the dash, right?). If it was rigged to make it work, maybe this will help a little. The remote turn on lead for aftermarket amps is usually solid blue. I can't remember what color the power antenna wire usually is (maybe blue with yellow??). You need to use a meter and see what is getting 12V and when. Poking around and aimlessly hooking up wires is a good way to fry stuff.

the stock amps are actually located in the rear in the quarter panels, they are the little mini amps that came with the upgraded stereo option for 89-95.
Im not even entirely sure if the mini amps are necessary with an aftermarket deck, but Best Buy did the install, and they left the amp wiring in place.
The first wire that i tried switching was that blue wire you are talking about, the problem is that this controls both the antenna and those mini amps. Hence when i switch off the antenna, the amps turn off and i get no sound out of the back. So going off of wiring diagrams i tried the pink/blue wire that goes into the power antenna relay (which says that it is switched in the radio for when the cassette player is on in the stock HU), but had the exact same problem. Ive searched the forum up and down, lots of people talk about adding a switch, but i could never find anybody who actually had. And it irritates the bejesus out of me when that antenna goes up and down all day.

I think the rear speakers have amps mounted on them IIRC. I pulled one of mine out a while back. I'll have a look in my wiring diagram. Ours should be the same.

OK, here's what I found:

-Black w/Orange from 10A guage fuse to antenna relay

-Solid Grey from 7.5A radio fuse to antenna relay

-Blue with Yellow goes from the antenna relay to the left rear speaker

-Black with Red goes from the antenna relay back to the radio

-Pink with Blue goes from the antenna relay to both rear speakers

-White with Black goes from the antenna relay to ground

Since all of these parts seem to be inter-related, I think your best bet is switching the wire right at the motor. My diagram shows Black with Yellow going into the motor and Solid Blue coming out. You should be able to catch the wire somewhere over in the passenger kickpanel before the wires get out to the motor.

hhmmmm.... but if i switch one of those wires, wont it only prevent the motor from going the direction that wire controls? e.g. if i switch black/yellow it wont go up, but it also cant come down if it is already up?

I guess I'm not understanding what you want to do.

If you don't want it to work, throw the switch to off.
If you want it to work, throw the switch to on.

Maybe I'm over-simplying it?

what i am saying is that if i switch the black/yellow wire. Say that i am listening to the radio, and i throw in a cd, with the switch turned off, because it is only connected to the up actuator on the motor, the antenna would stay up. This is fine if i start out listening to cds, but if i want to switch the antenna doesnt come down until i turn the stereo off, which would activate the down switch. Unless im wrong, which is likely. Thanks again

If you want more control over it, it will get complicated. Get a std antenna and junk the power one. You will eventually anyway...
