The dimensions aren't what kills it, it's the Filesize limit. 10K?! Comon, I had to reduce the quality of my Avatar down to low quality and it is only 140x105

this ain't burger king!!!

storage + bandwidth = $$$

fiveofeen: i hear ya and this topic came up many eons ago, but the admins (hope chris/corey dont mind me rehashing the explanation) decided on a compromise between user goodies like the avatar size and the effects on bandwidth and storage cost.

Bandwith shouldn't come into play with an Avatar hosted off-site should it?

As far as I know, Vbull would only have to fetch the image, and it would be a negligable load on the server.

Course, what do I know.

I kinda like the fact that this site hasn't got all the stuff in the sig lines. Some of the other sites look like giant billboards of the insane. At least we can read what the thread says without having to decipher whats thread and whats ego.

What he said!
Current size of avatars is fine by my book. I use the avatar to recognize people and to distinguish myself from the masses. I don't need a billboard to ignore so that I can read the text that I'm here for.

All avs are hosted here.
When you point to an URL in your Control Panel to link to the av, it pulls the av into the server, and our server hosts it.

Pics in sigs is an option here, but will not be turned on as discussed in the past.
One of the reasons is there is no way to regulate the pixel or file size of them in our admin area, and I have seen forums that allow them, and some are HUGE, and that can get out of hand very fast, and be to hard for us to police.

You're right in the context of bandwidth on the YT server, but there's also the perspective of users pulling all that stuff.

As it is now, with 20 messages per page, that's 200k (max) in additional pulls that each user has to do. That can be a lot for dial-up users.

The anigif that Fiveofeen has is 103k... If that size was granted to everyone, then you're looking at up to 2meg per page. That's even a lot for broadband users.

If you can see my avatar then YT stores a copy on its server, I just renamed it on my server.

I also agree with what the others said about forums that allow huge banner type sigs, makes for a TON of scrolling between comments.

EDIT: too slow again, Corey already answered the first point and the second. D'oh!

It's pretty labor intensive, plus they are normally compressed as far as they will go.

I use an online service.
http://www.animationfactory.com/

Look for the "Gif Works" link near the top.
http://www.gifworks.com/

Very simple to use, you can upload your pic from your PC, or link it from the web.
See my Logitech Z680 speakers in my avatar?
I took the pic from Logitechs site, then used the Add Transparency command to make it a clear gif.

You can resize them with the tool too.
Many other apps when you try to resize an animated gif destroy the animation.

I like and dislike the limits here, I like them so we don't end up looking like other forums but I wouldn't mind having an option to choose an avatar or a sig image like the one I use on the 4Roc site.

Though I see the problem were who is going to sit there and police every one's signature each time they update it. I'm sure they woudln't, I know I don't.

Matt,
Can you honestly tell a difference in an image so small? So what if its compressed, you can still get a good image out of it. Yours looks great, better than most anyway.

Besides, if anyone has an image they wanted to use as their avatar, shoot me a PM and I can rip one off for you. Only takes a second, that's why I change mine so frequently
