Yep, thats right. I posted on a 7 year old thread to show 2 things.

1. This question was never answered and I need to know this answer.

2. I DID look and to no avail I could find no other thread that addressed this particular issue.

Long story short, my OEM (factory) swing out tire carrier on my 2nd gen 4runner has a little bit of play and any and all bumps in the road make it rattle and bounce the carrier against the hinge on the tail gate.

SO basically to restate the above question. How can I stiffen this thing up so it is solid and has no play thus ceasing the noisy rattle?

hahahaha aw man, does that mean I may have accidentally thread jacked? Yikes! Hope not.....

Glad to hear that you did end up having a solution Kudos to self made swag! I dont have the means to build my own armor yet, so I am kinda just makin do with what I have for the time being.

I was thinking (now dont laugh too hard) Of using like a bump stop one would use on an IFS rig. Thats all I have come up with so far. I am just wondering if anyone else has had this issue or has a sound idea to help fix.

As always any and all help is appreciated!

What I did for mine, which without a visual reference of yours this may not apply, was cut up my wifes teflon cutting board . I made a thin strip and screwed it on the top of the bumper, centered. Now, in order to latch the swingout I have to push down which in turn takes any slop out of the latch mechinism....

Hrm, I might be misunderstanding what you are explaining BBP. To me it sounds as though the slop you had was up and down as to where mine is in and out. If that makes sense lol. Do you have a pic perhaps to show? Thanks.

Mine was kinda banging all around. Providing that "tension block" alleviated ALL movement...

...I'll see if I can dig up a pic...

I have built a few custom bumpers so I'm not sure if this will help, but when I build a bumper/tire carrier, they have been for 35" tires and I havent had any issues yet, i make sure that the tire will Lightly press up against a bumpstop piece of rubber, preferrably down low so as to put the carrier under a bit of tension when it latches. this helps alot especially with the larger tires. You may have to put two, in order to keep the tire from wiggling top to bottom, but i wouldndt advise just screwing one onto thin body panels as there is no structural strength there and it will still wiggle, not to mention denting your rig! ill post pics of one I did for my brothers jeep, but I dont remember if I took pics of the stops specifically.

I had to put the pics in my profile gallery, due to their size. Pic 5 shows the carrier open, but it was before I relocated the rubber stops. It gives you an idea of what I'm saying, ideally the rubber should compress about 1/4" and I've found this is usually enough tension to prevent tire wiggle/bounce. I hope this helps.
