My old smitty built had seen all the mud and rocks it could handle so it was time to build a new bumper.

Before:


I must have looked at a 1000 different bumper ideas on the net before deciding how I would make it. Finally I just grabbed some steel, the plasma cutter, the grinder and the welder and went to it.

Cut some square tubing and used the Lincoln to see what it would look like:


I based it around the winch dimensions:


Then I build the center section and drilled some holes to allow some air through:


Tried something else:


Worked on it some more:


Put the sides on it:


After some more mods, grinding and welding:


It was finally ready for paint:


Finally started its final install onto the truck:


The install is done in 3 parts: 1. Bold the bracket onto the truck, 2. Slide the bumper on the bracket 3. Put winch and winch plate on top of it all. This way a single person can install the bumper without having to carry 200 pounds!


And here is the finished product:

200lbs. is that in canadian pounds? that is heavy. damn.

 

Have you ever tried to bolt up a bumper with a winch on it and line up the bolts? It feels like 200 ponds. The bumper is actually only 65 and the winch is 86.

ok. that makes more sense. I personally would never attempt to bolt the winch attached to the bumper in the first place but to each its own

The idea for a 2 piece bumper came after helping a buddy install his ARB. In the ARB the winch installs from the inside with the bolts facing forwars so it is impossible to mount the winch after. The 2 piece design allows for a light (15 pound) bracket to be bolted on and then acts as a shelf for the rest of the bumper.

I love it .. reminds me of the first bumper I built for my first /80 . (way back when!! )

I'm not a fan of the tube crap now a days , stingers and such , that marlin , trailgear and everyone and there dog has polluted the market with !!

Sorry man, it litterally took me a year to get back to the garage to build this one.

The material list is quite short.

1 x 12' piece of 2x6 3/16th thick piece of steel (Used 90% of it)
1 5' 2x2 1/4" angle iron
1 2' 1.5" square tubing
10 1.5" long half inch, grade 8 bolts and nuts

That's it!

Took me 4 hours to cut and tack weld the majority of it and bout 8 hours to finish it up to the point where it is today.

I agree. That's not to say that people are wrong for wanting them, but I prefer the Warn/ARB styles.

Whatever floats your boat, though. I love those dudes I see running stingers bolted to the stock bumpers on their full-size trucks. Just makes me laugh.
