ok guys this is my question.... im into mudding, i go to the muddruns in my area every weekend theres a differant one in differant counties all the time i go to all of them.... i would say i am the smalest truck there and i am proud to say last month i got 3rd place in the 4 and 6 cylender class! whoo toyota. ok well here comes the question. in the mudd runs the classes are defined usually by cylenders or by tire size, i have figured out that if i am running 38s then i will be able to get into every class. and the guy laughed at me when i asked what classes i could run with a 4 cylender, he told me " you can run all of them with a 4 cylender but your not going be able to keep up" so i went to thinking most of thoes trucks are running 300-550hp. in a 4500lb. truck on 38s. to 44s they sink before they move than just push through. well my idea is taking a LC Enginereing stage 3 stroker motor and pushing all its got i figure for 6-7grand i can be pushing damn near 600hp out of a 22re. ive herd its been done! then i was thinking about going with dynotrak axels front and rear. and im not sure if i want to keep a beefed up toyota 8' or going with a dana 60 swap front and rear.. i would like to keep it light and wicked powerful.. ok the last guy i talked to told me it was a good idea but i was nuts he said with that much power id twist my frame. then he said i break drive shafts left and right, i just want an opinion from you all on if you think my toyotas going to hold up if built well? and if you think its doable? and if you all know of any better parts or parts that would help me acomplish this? Im tired of all the big trucks running over the small ones and taking all the big money!!! i had a 1980 chevy 4x4 on 44s with a 454. that was my old truck and it sucked my toyota will go anywhere that truck went so thats why i want to change trucks..! well thanks guys

Swap in a 3.4 V6 and install a supersharger. Won't be too heavy for your truck and could be built to produce alot of power. It's a common engine, it's toyota and it's reliable. When you push a 22re that hard, you're not gonna get much life out of it.

+1, they're not that heavy, really.

If you do the 3.4, I wouldn't do a supercharger. I know FL mud. The last thing you want is to suck mud into the blower.

Whatever you decide to do, get a snorkel. A good snorkel. And waterproof your engine bay.

I'd say, eliminate ALL unnecessary weight, get the lightest wheels you can, and run 35s...........that should make you pretty light.

good ideas yall. and ive thought of them all. and ive done a 4.3 swap and i liked it alot. im trying to do something a little differant. im really wanting to see some of these guys jaw drop when they find out i just beat there v8 with half the cylenders. and what he just said pushing a 22re that hard will break things, and wont last thats what im working on now is what can i do to make it take a beating like a stock one. is it posable? who knows. and just to let yall know if your mudding in florida or anyplace that has florida mud/water, DO NOT put a blower on your truck... a belt driven supercharger would work but with a snorkel your not going to get enuf air to suply it corectly and if you dont have a snorkel haha your super chargers dont liek water!! lol...also another one of you said stick with 35s... that is what i have now and i am unable to run some of the classes i want to, so its enevatable i must run 38s.. and heres some more upgrades that i didnt mention... for tires im going 38 cut boggers, after there cut they sit about 12in wide and 38 in tall. im going 5.29 gears and an ox locker rear and lockright up front. im figuring thin and tall will run better then wide and short.. got any opinion on that one? im kinda wanting to know if the dynatrax axels are going to hold. and does anyone know a good solid LIGHT way to strengthen my frame? thanx yall Yoter out

I doubt you would ever get 600 hp out of a 22re, but I bet if you played the game right you could do ALOT with your truck. Put a racing 22re in there that can put out 200hp and wind up real high. I think at 200hp the 22re will still have its integrity.

Good question about the tires... wider tires will float more but also be more rotational intertia for your little 22re to spin up. Skinnier tires will sink through the mud and grab it would seem and be slightly less for the engine to spin.

We're gonna have to be scientific about this one

You might even look into 4crawler's modifications for reducing the drag of the underside of the truck. His intention is to allow it to chug through snow, but I think the same would apply for helping your truck to slip through the mud.

hum i havnt looked into the 3rz but i have looked into turbo and im not sure i want to have that much compression but i will look into the motor thanks

check out 7mgte, 1jz, and 2jz. supra engines. I6 Loads of power n torque n they can all be turbocharged. A TT 2jz can produce over 1000hp.

What is ur budget on this build?

And I know that getting mud into a stock 3.4 supercharger is still going to require going through the air intake. Not sure why it matters, charger or not.

Anything is possible, just throw money at it.

I would avoid a stock 8" rear like the plague. The HP you are thinking you can or want to throw at it would eat it.

Try Tundra or LC.

The reason the 22re does so good on rocks is gearing. Mud is HP and engine.

yea x2 on 881stgen's post, look at gettin that supra engine and throw a turbo or 2 on there haha. then you could get a sweet BOV and after you dominate them just let em hear it for a while as your celebrating!!

i spent a little time looking into the 2jz earlier i liked what i saw im not sure how well its going to hold up in a truck tho. does anyone know anyone who has done it? my price range is about 10-15k. i already have rims and tires so that cuts out a little. dyno track wants 5k a piece for axels and i still have to do the sas. so i got another 4k for a motor and i can also sell my 22re which i just did alot of work to and has 100 miles on it. i got it bored .30 and had a stage 2 lc cam port and polished heads 2 1/2in headers to a stragit pipe. i had to get all new pistens and a new head i chacked my old one over heated in a mudd hole. its brand new thats kinda another reason i wanted to stick with building up my current 22re.. but i know i can at least get a grand out of it. so that will leave me with about 5k for motor, also if i must i can spend a little more im just trying to stay within a budget. get what i mean?

a 600hp 22re...what would you do about a tranny? That much horse power would eat up the stocker. Also you will need at least 1 ton axles to handle that much power.

If you're talking about tractor tires, maybe. Most tractors are too heavy to gain any flotation effect from "flotation" tires. Some heavy equipment(skidders)does have actual monster truck tires, and still does NO floating. Too much weight, but the width adds traction and the height is for ground clearance, which does help in shallow mud(less than 24").

Tall and thin will dig well, maybe too well, depends on how deep the mud is. Dig too deep..you be stuck.

For deep mud(24" or better)you want the biggest(widest/tallest)you can fit. Flotation is a key. Wider floats better, sinks less. Wider also gives you more tread surface which will add traction in any mud regardless of depth, another key. Finally, taller adds air volume(more displacement=more flotation also), but requires more gearing/hp. The added weight from larger tires is negligible when negotiating a mudhole.

IMO. Just my theory. So on so forth...

like i said man i thought about the 350 and everyone does that. and to tell you the truth i havnt figured out the tranny situation yet! lol. im trying to stay toyota i already had a pickup with a 4.3 in it. i loved it but i want to do something no one elts has. and i was looking at dana 60s not sure about it tho. like i said im thinking small and light. im still doing alot of reserch on this project so im still not 100% on anything. but thanks for your continuing input and that 4runner with the 2jz was sick.. and i personally dont think i could handle that much fab.. but i wish i could.

very good theory, i couldnt tell you how deep the mudd will be i never know. i know last time i went i did hit a deep spon and it coverd my hood on 34 tsls. so far my 34 1050s have not gotten me stuck. they have got me stopped but reverse is a merical.. i always pull right out. and since you say tall is good with hp then im on the right track with making this think plenty powerful enuf to turn them. also gearing. if im going 38 boggers are 5.29s going to be over kill? should i stick with 4.88s? ive been told both will work. a buddy of mine has 5.29s with 44s on his toyota and he can smoke em on solid ground. any why thankx bud i like that theory!

On the 3.4 swap and then supercharging idea, I know to do the supercharger the right way you end up spending around $6k not to mention the engine itself or any of the labor! No real point I guess to my statement, other than to say you are talking A LOT of money; in which case, I need a loan.
