Liftgate to tailgate conversion

I was wondering if anyone has or has thought about cutting up the liftgate on a 3rd gen or newer 4runner and converting it to a tailgate set up like on a 1st or 2nd gen.

Dang, i'd like to convert my tailgate to a lift... it's a pita to get into at times.

Maybe we should just trade.

Those back halfed 4 runners look so sweet... nice work, I like the look of the tailgate too.

Ive been thinking about doing the same thing to my 3rd gen to go along with my roof chop. Im going to be cutting from the windshield all the way back to make a "convertable" 4runner that I can take the hard top on and off when I want. I was thinking about making the liftgate fully removable and then having a second, seperate tailgate from a 2nd gen to fit on there. Earlier, I had thought of just making the rear hatch exactly like the 1st/2nd gens with the tailgate and up-lifting rear window, but couldnt really figure out a good way to make it so that the window would still roll down. I think the best thing to do in your case would be to take the rear hatch and tailgate from the 1st/2nd gens and cut/weld them to fit onto the back of your 3rd gen, that way, you keep the whole system in tact and just have it custom fit to your rig.

if your going to do what Mossyrocks did, why not just get a quad cab tacoma and swap all your mods over?

Because you don't get bragging rights if you do that.

And if you already have a badass SAS'ed 3rd gen rock crawler, then why the heck not?
