f150 spring mounts frenched

I am getting ready to do a f150 spring swap and needed to weld my front springs 11" forward from the stock location but didnt want them to hang down so low. solution was to french them into the frame. I was in the process of doing the tank lift so while the tank was out i did this mod. here are a few pics of the process
First think I did was lots of research online and then I measured where i wanted them and traced them on the frame side and cut them out with the plasma cutter. I love that thing!

Holding in place so you can get an idea of what I am trying to do. I think its gona work. next i cleaned the cutouts with the grinder and tack the mounts in with the bolt holes 11" center of old mount bolts to new bolt holes.

mounts tacked in place and then measured and remeasured again to make sure they are in the correct location. once i was satisfied i finish welding them in. I added some 1/8 inch plate to the front of the mounts to box in the frame.

1/4 inch plate cut out to help reinforce where i cut the frame for the mounts.

Here is my 1/4 inch plate welded in for extra strength. now just need to clean up and paint them.

Here is the mounts finished and painted waiting for my spring swap.

That looks awesome. the only thing I would have done different would be not having flat sides on the reinforcement plate, it creates a long straight plane in which stress is focused potentially causing cracks.

well they say practice makes perfect.

I do give you credit for posting those pictures .

I think 1/4" was a bit over kill but one uses what one has laying around.

as was said watch the straight vertical welds as well as welding the corners it creates stress risers .

Like any other welding you need to be comfortable and be able to see the joint your welding ..

If your plans include more of this type of work a horizontal band saw makes life so much easier.

Also it helps to use a guide when cutting things with your torch be it plasma or oxy-fuel

Thanks for the pointers. My plasma has a hard time with the 1/4 plate. I did just use what I had.
