Engine puller- Winch vs. electric hoist?????

Hi guys, I'm building an engine pulling set-up in my garage with I beams, an electric trolly, and either a winch or electric hoist. I figured you guys would know most about winches, so here we go.....

Is a 1 ton winch strong enough to LIFT 500 lbs? How do the rating work? Id like to just use my off-road winch as an electric hoist but if its not safe, i'll invest in a cheap electric hoist....

Opinions? Knowledge?

Thanks guys!!!!

i would say yes...a 3500lb winch can pull a Sportsman 800cc 4x4 4wheeler on asphalt with all 4 tires locked up..or spinning in reverse..so i would say a 1ton winch can lift a little motor

The Warn Power PUll is a great little Hoist for this application. A 1 ton winch has 2000lb lifting/pulling force so I think the 500-800lb Motor would not be a problem for it.

Your normal winch is not really made to be used as a hoist it is not set up to pull in that direction .

I suppose with the proper mounting it could be done .

I myself would use a hoist if at all possible.
