Is converting Nerf Bars in to Rock Sliders possible??

I have a set of chron nerf bars(step bars) on my 86 Yota pickup. They are old, some dents and getting dull. Been thinking of making some rock sliders for it since when it is back on the road I will take it back out on trails and in Colorado we got alot of rocks lol. But Im wondering if its possible to convert my neft bars into sliders? I know I will have to add a center brace and better mounts then flat ends bolted to frame. I can do the work myself, have small welder, grinder and some fab experience to go with redneck know how.
Anyone got any ideas? Anyone done this????

Possible I guess. But not worth the money.

The nerf bars are made of a very thin and flimsy metal. First time you actually need them and put the weight of the vehicle on them, they will fail.

DOM 1.75x.120 is a little over 3 bucks a foot if you can find a good tube supply vendor, otherwise rough stuff has it for about 6 bucks a foot+shipping (best online price I've found).
Don't waste your time with retrofitting nerf bars.

I was thinking about building some myself, but trail gear makes a set for less than 200 which is hard to beat, I spent almost that much on three pieces of DOM tubing for my front bumper alone. Here's a link http://www.trail-gear.com/rock-sliders.
Those chrome things are just for show, they have very little strength.

Yes. You can convert them. Unbolt them, sell them, buy sliders. Converted.

Thread can be closed now.

All joking aside, it will not be worth it to convert your nerf/step bars into sliders. They are two completely different animals.

Before you spend the high price for Dom consider using regular 1.25 schedule 80 pipe. Its almost .25 thick and the outside diameter is about 1.625. I just got done building mine with that as the main tube and some 1.5x.120 wall tubing for the rest. A friend if mine did the same thing and has never bent them. I spent about $90 for all the material needed for them.

If youre gonna build them yourself, pipe is a good cheap alternative to DOM or HREW... It's a rock slider, not a cage. DOM is a waste of $ on armor in this kind of application.. If you were running say a King of the Hammers Buggy... DOM is probably in the budget and would be worth the investment.

Personally, I run 1.75x120 HREW for everything. But pipe for a bumper or sliders is perfectly acceptable.

Thats what I was thinking Haha.

Just get rid of them. Square toob is also pretty cheap and works quite nice.

On a friends truck:

that's the good stuff right there. the majority of my truggy's rear end is comprised of 3/16 2x2. solid stuff!

I considered square sliders but I still prefer tube.

I think filling them with lead would be better. They would be so much heavier! Such beefiness!
