A pile of metal is always a good place to start. What is the philosophy behind it? Are you going for a lot of protection, a lot of clearance, mounting points, Batmanesque lines...?

Inspiration!

I was thinking something that says: "duuuude- that set-up screams awesomeness! it's like some kind of stealth/special ops/apocalyptic super truck. with a "play pen" on the back."-Ian
Well something like that anyway.

R.DesJardin, when you make a bumper, do you plan it out a whole lot before you start building, or do you kind of improvise as you go and see where it ends up?

I'm hoping to make one pretty soon and am having trouble designing it..

When I built my rear bumper I had scoured the forums for other rear bumpers, figured out what I thought looked good and what would work best for me. Then I did a rough sketch on some graph paper. Guesstimated how much metal I would need and just went at it.
For the record, I love my rear bumper. It does exactly what I want and has withstood plenty of beatings. I still need to add a couple things like a hitch receiver and a couple D ring points but so far I have no complaints.
Just my 2cents.

Sorry for the thread jack OP. Good luck with your bumper build.

When i built my bumper i started with a rough idea and built a cardboard mock up first.

And then I started building it

I love watching the bumper builds come together on this site.

I can see what I want before I start, then I just weld metal together to make it look that way. I do use sletching to help a little with layout,

That's exactly what they are. For rope, chain, etc.
