Arizona Roll Call

well, fixed the hub today. some how the collar that holds the spring and the gear together got bent and released the spring. used the collar from the hub i got at the junkyard and it's all good now.
also found a broken axle bolt on the drivers side... so project bolt extraction begins later tonight. overall, a successful afternoon.

fixed everything on the runner and went out to Table Mesa. Found a pretty interesting obstacle and pulled the front driver tire nearly 2ft in the air. That was all fine and dandy until it teetered and the front went into a hole. I got some vid that I'll post later. being new to 4x4, and not knowing the truck that well, I was sure i was going to flop it. luckily, it stayed upright.

Anyone know the laws here for mud flaps and wide tires? Im about to put on some procomp 15x10 with 2.5 backspace. So they are going to stick out past the fenders. I took off the rear bumper cuz Im getting a tube one...so I dont have any mud flaps (90 4runner). Ive seen sand rails and quads driving one the street here so will I get pulled over?

28-958.01. Rear fender splash guards
A. A person shall not operate a truck, trailer, semitrailer or bus on a highway unless the vehicle is equipped with rear fender splash guards that comply with the specifications provided in this section.
B. The splash guards:
1. Shall be attached in a manner that prevents the splashing of mud or water on the windshield of other motor vehicles.
2. Shall extend to a length of not more than eight inches from the ground.
3. Shall be wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected.
4. Shall be installed close enough to the tread surface of the tire or wheel to control the side throw of the bulk of the thrown road surface material.
5. May be constructed of a flexible rubberized material.
6. Shall be attached in a manner that, regardless of movement either in the splash guards or the vehicle, the splash guards retain their general parallel relationship to the tread surface of the tire or wheel under all ordinary operating conditions.
C. This section does not apply to:
1. A vehicle commonly known as a pickup truck with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of ten thousand pounds or less, except that this section applies if the pickup truck has been modified from the original bumper height design to raise the center of gravity of the pickup truck.
2. A truck tractor or converter dolly when used in combination with another vehicle.
3. A single, tandem or triple axle trailer with fenders that are wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected and that extend to a length of not more than fourteen inches from the ground.
My tires stick out and I have about 3"of lift and I have not been harassed about my tires - yet.

Jeff pretty much covered it, but I'll add that from experience I've learned the level to which an officer will enforce these laws often depends on his interpretation of the law, what kind of mood he is in on that particular day, and whether or not he has a vendetta against those that participate in our sport. Often times it is simply used as an excuse to pull you over, either to dig for something bigger or just to check out your rig and tell you about his. My last mudflap violation (in a flatbed toyota pickup) resulted in a fix-it ticket. I simply bought and installed mudflaps and showed pictures and reciepts to the judge and it all went away.
Another thing, supposedly because the written law specifies truck, pickup truck, and truck tractor these laws do not apply to lifted SUV's. I have not yet had the opportunity to test this loophole as I'm fairly new to 4runners, but I'm sure I'll get my chance. I have had several friends hassled about the fender flare issue though.

Well...I dont want to give the cops ANY reason to pull me ouver. So I guess I will get the fender flares and install them before I get paint. I have reasearched this all day and technically 4runners are cosidered "station wagons" and the mud flap law doesnt apply. Who knows? lol Guess I will put some mud flaps on too. If only some small ones at least it will have them.

So I think I'm going to do some wrenching this weekend if anyone wants to stop by. On the "to do" list in no particular order are:
Swap out my front inner axles with 30 splines if anyone hasn't seen a straight axle apart.
Swap out bushings in my front leaf springs and change u-bolts.
Change my T case rear output seal.
Maybe tear apart my freewheeling hubs for clean up and maintenance.
If we get a nice sized group maybe we could get a few other folks' small projects done then grill/beer/pool afterward.
PM me for address and phone if you're interested.

Wrenching w/ BLKNBLU
OH Mike, if I hadn't already committed to work this weekend I'd be there. We're installing a set of weld on sliders and performing a frame chop. Normally I don't work on the weekends but I've taken this set of sliders from raw material to the paint all by my lonesome. Really proud of how they've turned out...just like all the others we've done. Now, the frame chop is something I haven't seen, so I asked if I could help... If you do it on Sunday, I'm there. PM me if you have enough people willing to do it on Sunday.

It will probably be an all w/e project with the rate I usually work at. Plus I'll be cleaning parts as I go and such so... Ted I'll let you know what, if anything, I've got going on for Sunday. I'll still be starting tomorrow though.

Lynx Lake was a great camp spot, all paved and tame though. Went exploring and found some cool trails with lots of shale(?) to climb up into the pines. Didn't go too far as the trail got pretty thin and there were a bunch of motorcycles using the trail making pretty good time...a few "water crossings" (pretty dry this time of year) and some good opportunity's to test my lockers out. Great time, highly recommended!
As a side note, I'm getting rid of my Geolandar MT's, they're on Craigslist and the market here if anyone is interested.

I am planning something for the 24th - we are thinking Box Canyon/Coke Ovens, Sunflower Mine, Table Mesa, or the good old standby Butcher Jones. It all kinda depends on who wants to come and what kinda junk they are driving. I'll post up a thread about it and see who's down.

Test fit mules....
I thought I might throw this out here incase some one with a 4th Gen. 4Runner might be lingering around. There's a thread already started over on T4R.Org: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-ge...tml#post864416
Avid OffRoad is in the process of getting a light bar ready for the 4th Generation of 4Runners and we're probably going to need some local people (2) for some test fitting's. If you own or know of someone who wants to participate send me a PM and I'll get in contact with you and share more details.
