how many of you guys use a gps while on the trail? ive been thinking of getting one and using it to mark raods that id like to explore as well as trails ive found. i tohught if a couple people out here had them we could all get together and post the co-ordinates to trails, so then if you go on a raod trip you can find trailheads easily.

 

sounds like a great idea..... but I'd rather get other ☺☺☺☺ first.... besides that takes half the fun outta being lost

 

When/if I finally get a gps, I would be interested in this for sure. My birthday's coming up, perhaps that's what I'll ask for.

 

I LOVE mine got a Lawrance at Pro Bass with the software that gives you topo, trails, etc. I have 2 mounts so I pull it out of my trail rig and put it in my 18wheeler for the long hauls

i've yet to jump on the GPS gagetry...although i have wheeled with people who use em. they seem like a great thing to have...sure beats the map n compass deal. looks like garmin is the way to go, especially with their map software. crappy..as my work only has the magellan ones. maybe one day i'll get off my arse n research which one to get...

 

I need a GPS too...time to time I lost the direction...in City or trail...heheh~
I've heard that the Lawrance gps is affortable and good.

 

I've got a Garmin eTrex and it works OK when the view of the sky is clear, not so good in heavy trees. If you're getting one for vehicle mounting definitely get one that can take an external antenna.
And Sonny and mkool I have the Garmin Canada Topo maps on cd, rentals can be arranged at very reasonable rates

 

I've got a Garmin 60CSX. Its pretty nice, has the quad something or other antennas, so you don't need an external even in a vehicle. Works great on my quad and my truck. Although I have to admit everywhere I've gone someone else has gone and... well it hasn't saved my life yet. But I have been marking all the trails and even some point of interest (camping spots, etc) that I would plan to return to at some point. before you buy check www.gpscity.com (not afilliated, just great prices/service)

 

I have a magellan meridian color, great for hiking and in the car, and easy to pack for plane trips with a rent car. The Meridian will give directions and points of interest (gas stations, etc) like the bigger ones, it just doesn't talk and can be taken on a hike easily with the Topo maps. I also have a Magellan road mate....it's great for on the road only, not hard to pack but is bigger.

GPS's are the greatest invention ever...My favorite toy...I love it more than my iPods!
