I just got a 91 5spd manuel pickup (all stock except for custom bumpers) and i was wondering what some good first mods would be....

Is it a 4 or 6? Do you know what gears you have in it now? Air intake silencer mod, custom exhaust, gears and/or traction devince, body lift, better tires, ball joint spacers and the list goes on.

Are you gonna 'wheel it? When the tires need to be replaced, put on some 33x10.50.

As for mods - in this order:
Armor (sliders, skid plates since you have bumpers done already)
Lockers

From there, you'll be able to wheel just about anything, and determine what you need next - SAS, long travel, small lift, etc - and you haven't spent any money on something you're just gonna cut off...

I agree with your suggestions but if he's running a 22 r-e, w/ 4.10's those 33's are gonna suck until he re-gears from what I've read as far as driveability and gas mileage is concerned. I doubt the 33x10.5's are going to be that much different in those aspects than a 12.5

BTW: I always hear you chime in about this size but I dont think I've actually seen pics of your setup besides your avatar. Care to show the rest of us what it looks like w/o lift?

Oops - I meant lockers/gears. Makes sense to do them at the same time...

There are quite a few pix at www.4wheelingoh.shutterfly.com/action

and with the 34's

Definately a good idea to do the gears when you do a lift and tires otherwise you will loose quite a bit of power.

What kind of wheeling makes a big difference too...

For rockcrawling, my 94 is set up with 33X9.5s and 4.10s and I know the first thing I need after lockers, but before SAS is a crawlbox. I just can't finesse anything cause I have to hit it too hard to get the engine to go over it - I am running the 4banger, but a 6 will behave similarly (though slightly better) so my mod list would look like this:

Tires
Locker
Dual case
another locker
Rockrails
SAS
Reagear axles

Huh? Regear when you do lockers and you won't have that problem (as much) for a FRACTION of the price and difficulty of doing a crawler. All that being said, I'm looking to do a crawler soon ...

Also, most people will get discouraged from the sport if they 'wheel without armor. Rockrails DEFINITELY need to be higher on your list.

A couple times a month + hunting is a lot of 'wheeling! Definitely get that thing armored up before you take a tree/rock through somewhere you don't want it!

More recent pix of my rig:

Wow nice rig. Yeah i'm looking at rock sliders and the OME lift currently...and then maybe some fender flares. But since i'm still in high school and most of my money is going to paying for college next year...i'm a little short on cash

Then skip the lift and fender flares - the pix above are 33x10.50-15 Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT on stock rims with no lift. If your truck came with 31's and you have 4.56 or 4.88 gears, you'll be fine. That will get you more ground clearance and make sure you have plenty of money left to stay on top of the regular maintenance, getting it in TOP NOTCH mechanical shape before any other mods...
