how hard is it to get the correct shim thickness under the pinion bearing?i think i can handle this job but i may encounter difficulty if i have to remove this bearing to reshim it.any writeups or experience with this will help me a lot.

It's pretty precise work. When mine started givin' up the ghost I took the easy slacker way out and bought a new used pumpkin and threw er in there myself. If you think you are up to the challege then give'r by all means...

I have set up a couple. Its not that hard if you have the right tools and know what you are doing.

GO to www.gearinstalls.com Zuk has a great site and frequents this board.

What ratio gears? Less than 4.88, give it a try. 4.88, 5.29, and especially 5.71 take it to someone who does it every day!

Why is that? I guess what I am asking is; what changes from the 4.56 and the 4.88 and 5.29s that make them harder to set up?

I think it's the teeth number and the size.

the lower the gears, the less teeth on the pinion and the more critical the setup. It's not any harder, just less forgiving of ANY kind of slop. (check out Zuk's site for what all has to be hit DEAD ON for 5.71's)

I have set up 5.29s and 4.10s. I really dont see adifference in the setup. So long as the numbers stamped on the pinion are corect, there really is no difference is the setup. Its just a matter of getting the correct pinion depth (derived from the difference in pinion #s) and setting them up.

I have researched Zuks site and use it as gospel.

im setting it up at a friends shop that builds rears only, but he hasnt done a toyota in a while.the gears are 529 yukons.he wants me to buy an extra timken bearing(timken came in the setup kit)so we can open up the id to use as a setup bearing.i cant use any of the stock ones we have around because they are not timken and they have a slightly different height and prolly dont fit the cup perfectly.he has setup bearings for all of the other common rears he does.ive priced this bearing and alone its about 40 bux.maybe i should just buy one.
thanks for all of the input!

I made one of them when I did my gears. I will be keeping it for work later on, but I may have an extra old timken sitting in the shop if you are interested.
