Yeah, but as mentioned above, if you didn't break this, what would you break instead?

Sounds like this trail repair isn't bad compared to a fragged R&P ...

I think this flange is breaking at such a low stress level that the 'what next' won't come until much further down the road. And I'd assume it would be the CV. The RP in the truck in question was missing few teeth before the flange broke. Whether the flange breaks or not... the RP sees just as much stress when both front tires are pulling as it does with just one. The flange is breaking in scenarios where a lot of torque is going to one wheel, so beefing up the flange shouldn't increase the loads seen at the RP.

Agreed. My thoughts were CV or hub, and it would take much more than the current breaking limit to do it.
