Started on a project to remove the factory steering stabilizer and replace it with a Procomp.

Finally got the end bolted to the frame off and took off the cotter pin and nut on the other side and I'm at the point of separating and removing the stabilizer from the relay rod.



I read the OME writeup but at this point I'm not sure if it should come out with relatively little force, a little tapping with a BFH or if this is the point where I need to use the ball-joint separator. If I need to use a ball joint separator, which size do I use and does it go between the seal and the relay rod?

I searched around some more and found a thread where someone used a torch to get the stabilizer out. Dug out my MAPP gas torch and heated the bolt up. A few good hits with the BFH, out she came!

attitude adjusters (BFH, etc..) for my stabilizer, too. Glad to see you

Not even close to a plumber - I'm a biomedical/electrical engineer. Part of my work deals with soldering surface mount components onto a circuit board - pretty much the opposite of the big torch/big hammer philosophy .

I have the MAPP gas torch for plumbing around the house, after I saw how much a friend was struggling with a regular propane torch.

OK, now that I have everything out. Should I secure the stud in the relay rod first or should I bolt the steering stabilizer to the stud first and then attach the assembly to the relay rod?

 

thanks for your post. After beating on the stock steering stabilizer for 1hr I checked here. I heated it with a maap gas torch as well and was able to remove it with a couple well placed hits. I replaced mine with the OME SD33.

 

Last act of desperation after all else failed to remove it. This baby popped it out like nothing not safe but it worked.

Any help on this would be great. Heated it with a propane torch for a long time, hammered on it, nothing.

Is there a heating tip? IE heat only the relay vs the bolt?

I hit it and hit it and hit it. NOTHING.

Is there a ball joint tool that would work?

 

Propane is just not Hot enough to do much good.

Any of the small Ball joint tools should work

Spray it good with the penetrating spray of your choice first
