can someone recommend a good off-road recovery gear box?

i'm looking for a container to take on trail runs that'll hold recovery gear, some tools, and spare parts (at least a cv axle).

i'd looking for something with separate compartments, secure closing lid, and that's made tough. i was thinking a store like wal-mart, target might have something, but wanted to ask y'all first.

i just use a plastic tote/storage box from wal-mart, and use a bungy cord to hold it in place, it hold everything (so far) i need.

Might I suggest a cargo box?

You could build it bigger than mine to hold more.
I keep my yank 'em strap off to the side in one of the factory storage compartments.

The winch stuff is held in a bag from Warn that is behind the drivers seat.

Ammo can!!!! They're old and cheap and a dime a dozen. I plan to get one and attach it the back once the hi lift is out of the way

I second the cargo box. I built mine thinking "I will never have enough stuff in the rig to fill this thing up", but sure enough it is usually full! It is a great place to put things you don't want in site to get stolen.

I use a walmart tote also. It holds everything I can think of excepting major replacement parts. All fluids, extra jack, small shovel, 2x4's, tire puncture kit, TruckAir compressor, etc etc. And I've only been off road a couple of times! Bought all this stuff "just in case"!

I don't have any specifics on a brand or configuration other than to take some time thinking about how much weight you can comfortably maneuver and what groups of things you might want to take or not take depending on the trip. If you get a big box and load it down with a bunch of tools, parts, recovery hardware, etc. it could be a real nuisance to move it around or load and unload it. It might be better to build a drawer system or use several smaller containers. That way each individual box is lighter and more organized.

Of course, if you work out with massive amounts of weight and don't mind dumping a big box out on the ground or in your rig to get to the item on the bottom, you can ignore this!

I've been looking for the same thing and just recently found it. It is made by a company called Waterloo. I found it at a local Ace hardware store after searching Target, Kmart, Home Depot, Lowes, and Orchard Suply. It is about the same size as one of those large Rubbermaid containers except the top securely latches on and there are two trays in the top that are perfect for holding tools. I can show it to you at Pismo.

ya...that'd be cool to check out at pismo. i'm gonna look around tomorrow for something, hopefully find something i like in time for the pismo trip. but now i'll add ace to the list of places to look.

Here's some pics of the one I found. Let me know by tomorrow if you want me to pick one up for you. I think it was around $40. It is plenty tuff. It was disigned for hauling tools to and from a job site.

hm, that looks like a nice one. real nice. only thing is...do you think a spare cv axle would fit in there? looks like it might be kinda small...
the need for a containter to hold that plus other parts/tools is what brought this all on...

I think it would fit, but I'll take some measurements this evening so you can know for sure.

I looked at that one, but I didn't like the fact that the top doesn't latch down unless you use a pad lock or something. I also like to have the trays for tools so if I need to work on my truck I can just take the trays out to where I am working.

Looks like the box I have might be too small after all. The dimensions of the usable space in the bottom section is 18"Lx11"Wx9"H. The dimensions of usable space in the first tray is 19"Lx12"Wx4.5"H. The dimensions of usable space in the second tray is 19"Lx12"Wx2"H.
