I want to get a Hi-Lift and i would like to mount it to my vehicle. The ideal spot for me is the rear cargo area. Where did you mount yours and what hardware/brackets did you use? pics of course help...

The roof rack and front bumper are out of the question.

 

Someone here is doing just that on a 4-Runner but I don't remember who.

I like Steve's mounting idea.

 

Didn't you recently build some kind of a storage unit for the back of your rig? It would be very easy to use that as a mounting surface. Hi-lift makes a couple of mounting brackets that I'm sure could be rigged to bolt to your storage unit. That would be pretty quick and pretty painless. Or you could rig something yourself, but that would take some creativity that I don't have. I'm sure other people will chime in on that one.

FWIW... I have the 60" jack, so it doesn't fit in the back of my truck. Before I built my storage unit, I would place the base of the jack in the back, near the tailgate, and lay the "shaft" across the top of the seat back. I'd put 1 headrest post through a hole in the shaft to keep the top of the jack from sliding around. Then I used a cheap ratchet strap and one of the forward tiedown loops on the floor of the cargo area to secure the jack in place. Never moved, very few rattles, but because the jack is 60" long, it made that side of the back seat hard to use to carry people.

I don't have any pictures, but it shouldn't be hard to visualize.

ah, how come? Anyways... Steve's idea is probably the best. Very cheap, easy to do. Wrap a towel/bungee cord around it if necessary to help with rattles.

 

Is that hi-lift painted or do they come in black? All I've ever seen is red...imagine why I'm asking...

Hi-lift rates them the same. People say all cast is better. I'm with hi-lift, though I got my 48" all cast for a whopping $49.95 locally. So that pretty much settled that one for me.

People that don't put them on the roof, typically don't want them there for weather reasons.

 

plus they arent the lightest things either. lifting it up there and pulling it down when needed could become a pain IMO.

 

Mounting it on the roof rack is not that much of a hassle IMO. It's not hard to install/take down. I'd rather have it outside than in the cab (which is usually full of camping gear). I put the hi-lift on the rack only for 4x4 trips, keep it well lubed, and it's been serving me well for years.

 

Yeup, that's mine.... And I hadn't seen Steve's before I did it either.

When I'm not off roading or don't need the storage space, I have mine laying across the wheel wells right up against the rear seat backs.
