Gears for the Front?

Gears for the Front?
Guys.... I just bought some 5.29's and a Detroit Locker from Trail Gear for the rear diff of my 95 4Runner. I was going to hold off on the front but I hear that if I'm running different ratios my 4wd is going to run like crap. Should both the front and rear be done at the same time?

Yes, they absolutly should. It wont "run" like crap, it will drive like hell. The front and rear will be fighting each other since they will be turning at different ratios. Since the front and rear drivelines turn at the same rate, the diffs must too. Otherwise the drivetrain will bind up and buck like crazy. Not to mention the possibility of breakage from it fighting itself.

Thanks....Maybe i'll hit up the 4x4 thing they got going on at the Puyallup Fairgrounds today and see what I can pick up. Any ideas on a limited slip for the front? good idea or bad one?

I looked into ARB before I bought the Detroit for the rear and I didn't wat to spend that much, plus as I took it, don't you need to buy and install a compressor to activate your ARB?

The cheapest front locker, like an aussie, costs $240. Gears are $200. Labor to have somebody set it up is about $250. Potentially a master install kit $100. You might want manual hubs if you don't like how it handles $75. That's $865.
My ARB will bolt right up and yes, you do need to install a compressor and switches. The small arb compressor is $150 and the large one is $225. Costco has a good compressor that will work for about $50 (if I remember correctly). There are a bunch of threads here that detail onboard air.
So for about the same price as the cheapest lunchbox locker out there you can have a superior selectable locker.

It isn't that your transfer case isn't going to like it...
You will DESTROY stuff with that different of ratios front to rear. You will either blow up the diff, break a drive shaft, or completely ruin the transfer case.
You can either buy Robinhood's front diff, or pay the same amount for a non selectable locker. Plus, Robinhoods diff will bolt in in a weekend, while you will have siginficant down time on the non selectable.

front and rear gears MUST match. you can put the rear 3rd in but do NOT engage 4wd until you get that front diff 5.29'd.
as for a front locker...yes you can run an aussie or a lockwrong up front...but IMO the absolute best is to go selectable. 100% lockup at the push of a button. as mentioned, to regear the front without a locker will cost you at least $4-500 bucks. might as add a couple bills to that and get the best setup all ready to be swapped in. dont worry about the price...it'll only hurt once
. better to pay once now, than twice later...

x2 on buying Robinhood's setup. ALL diffs compromise on either on-road performance, off-road performance, or price. The ONLY diffs that don't have a performance compromise are the selectables, but they cost more. You have the opportunity to buy the best performing diff without the price penalty.

Thanks for all the advice. Robinhod....I can't figure out how to do a pm on here, it keeps giving me "page unavailable". I'm going to go check this 4x4 swap meet out in my area today and see what's available. I am diffinately interested in your deal though. I will try again to contact you this evening.

It's a lot cheaper than I thought. It weighs 109 lbs (if I remember correctly) and it would cost $75 from fedex. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get you an official quote.
