I looked all over on the inside of my door jams and couldn't find the code to find out what my gear ratio is. I found my VIN number on all 4 doors, and on my drivers side front door I found "119 946 5954". Looks more like a phone number to me than any other code. Is the code that is supposed to be there on a sticker that could have been peeled off?

I'm still toying with the idea of going to 33's and I want to know where I stand just incase I come across an awesome oppertunity.

Here's some good info, if you haven't already check your firewall also as some of them are located there instead of the doorjamb.

 

Yeah, check the plate on the firewall, that's where the info you want is, towards the bottom. You don't want the VIN.

 

Your codes will be on the drivers door jam somewhere.
Ever since 88 or 89, Toyota put all the info there. Up to then it was on the firewall.
You should see codes that say:
"A/TM" then something like "R150/G282"
Those are your transmission code and axle gear code.

Alright, I've got 3.9 gears according to the info on my 4Runner. Right now I'm running 31's with the 3.9's. If I go to 33's I'm thinking of regearing to a 4.6 or something. Does that sound about right?

It sounds right if you want to keep things the same. 4.56 with 33's should put you back to stock. I had 3.91 gears and went to 4.88 and love it.

 

When are you going to regear?
I might be able to use that 3.90 3rd in my sisters truck in the summer.

I'm not really sure when I'm going to do it. I have a roommate that owes me a lot of cash, so whenever he has paid me back in full will probably be determine when I do it.

If you are positive you want to buy them I might be inclined to find the money sooner so we can work something out so you will have them when you need them.

What would happen if I put in the new gears before I got the bigger tires? I'm not sure if I'd be able to come up with enough to do both at the same time.

You'll be running higher revs in all gears/speeds with the higher numbered (lower) gears.
I've got 5.29's and 32" tires right now.
if I were going to have stock ratio, it would have been somewhere between 4.56 and 4.88 gears.
Basically, I'm overgeared by about 15%
My speedo reads 15% faster than what I'm actually doing.
Not bad in town, but on the highway it can get to be a alittle much.
You'll get some great off-the-line preformance, but the top end will "slow down".
Other than that, it may effect gas mileage, but that's about it.

I'm running 4.88 with 31's and I have a 20% difference. So when my spedo says 72 mph I'm really doing 60 mph. My top speed right now would be about 85 mph and that would be red line pushing beyond. I don't do any daily highway driving so it doesn't bother me. But I have noticed a better city gas milage.

 

does this apply to an 1985 4x2 pickup truck? i would like to know what gears i have... i went from stock sized 205/75/14s up to 31s... its a bit doggier than it was ... but still works.... im sure the clutch helps too though
