not sure... but on the earlier trucks, the holes are already there for the towhook on the left side.... mounts using the same bolts and hook even as the right side

that thread is this one, however its on a 89... https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123/show-us-your-best-cheap-mods-62861/

the vehicle in question is a 99... as i mentioned earlier not sure if the frames differ or not between the earleir trucks and the later trucks, but it was definately possible to mount a stock hook onto the left side with no modifications

my truck is an 85 and 4x2 and had no hooks, i bought standard tow hooks and installed them with no problems at all

I put one on my 2001 4Runner, just unbolted the factory tie-down bracket and bolted the hook on there. You need longer bolts though.

They welded nuts on the back side, just thread the bolts through and tighten em down. I put a second one on my 2nd gen...I just took both loops off and had just the hooks on there...it was easier to hook up to them that way.

sounds good...ill work on that tonight...im also putting on a trailer hitch that i picked up, hopefully it will be fairly easy install, it says it will fit a 95-03 taco, so i figured itd fit the 4runner, if not, thats where the fun comes! after getting stuck pretty bad a week ago and only have the one factory tow hook as a means of recovery, i figured itd be a good idea to invest in some recovery points...ive picked up a d-shackle to put on the hitch, and picked up that second hook, so now the only thing left to do is save for a tjm and warn winch! thanks for the help...maybe ill put up some pics when i get done

you'd be better off getting some shackle hangers from http://www.sonoransteel.com

those hooks can be dangerous if used incorrectly...

well id like to have enough money to get those shackle hangers, but i think my hooks will do just fine. im working on the project right now, the hitch is providing some problems...the instructions say a 1/2" bit is needed...ive drilled the holes, and the bolts dont fit...and i dont have anything bigger, so ive got to make a trip to home depot...but im looking at getting the warn receiver shackle to put in the hitch, pics will be coming though, i promise

updates on the hitch install! we have had to put a hault on the install because of rain and the fact the 4runner wont fit in the garage with the roof rack...lots of pieces, dont think well have to use it all though

weve got one bracket on the left side, and were working on drilling the holes for the other bracket when the rain started

alright all finished up with the hitch...it looks a little goofy because of the body lift, but it will serve its purpose well! front tow hook should be completed in a few days, pics to come
