flat towing my truck...please help!!!!

flat towing my truck...please help!!!!

hey, cant remember if i posted this yet, but i cant find it anywhere so hey whatever........ I plan on towing my pickup to local4x4 places,what i need to know is, can i flat tow it with just a tow bar? if i could i would love it but im not sure if its possible cause my welded rear end and stuff, would i have to disconnect the driveshaft or something? thanks for the help.

flat towing

you can flat tow your rig no problem. Make sure the transfer case is in 2hi. and for distances of less then 60 miles towing it with the drive line in is not a problem. Tow it more then that might want to remove the rear drive line.

Might want to doublecheck the owner's manual on that, I seem to remember some 4wds needing to have the tranny in gear and transfer in neutral.

im towing 250 miles so im just gonna disconnect the driveshafts and go....thanks anyways though guys

Just a suggestion for ease. I flat tow my rig on all long trips...... I bent a 1" peice of metal, drilled some holes in it, and mounted it to the bottom side of my vehicle. Acts as a bracket that holds the driveline. This way I only remove the one end from the diff and I dont need to stress over the driveline dropping and killing someone on the freeway.

i have a similar idea in the works, as soon as i get the 4 bolts out of the 3rd member im going to make a piece of metal that will bolt to it and use a exhuast hanger i found at shucks to hang it, or something like that.

tranfer case

if you flat tow your rig and dont remaove your drive line leave the transfercase in 2hi, if you put it in neutral it locks the front and rear drive lines together. The reason i know is we did this to a friends when he was going to moses lake . Needless to say he had to replace the trans and tranfercase when he finally made it there. the cv joint on the front driveline didnt like doing70mphs.

so this is my plan, if theres a flaw please correct me and tell me how to do it....

disconnect the driveline leaving the transfer case in 2 hi the hubs unlocked with the transmission in nuetrual....that is the ideal way i should have the vehicle set up to tow correct? just making sure cause i have 5 more days till i have to leave with it!

If you disconnect the rear shaft and leave the hubs unlocked then it doesn't matter what gear the tranny/transfer is in.

Just curious, is it an auto or 5 speed. In an auto you MUST undo the rear drive shaft. The auto needs the motor running to circulate the fluid. It will die. Putting the transfer in Neutral will cause the front driveline to turn as mentioned, that will hurt tow rig fuel economy and wear your front diff and transfer un-necessairally.

Unlock front hubs, disco rear DS, go for it without worries. The welded rear diff is not a factor. It'll wear tires faster but won't effect the driveline.
