a dumb question

Well, it is possible that I'm wrong. It happened once before. I'll never forget that day. It was a Tuesday.
Does the transfer case change the rotation of the front DS? If it does, meaning the rear spins counter-clockwise and the front clockwise while facing the pinion, then it should work. I've never paid close attention to it.

the answer is yes you can put your rear 3rd in the front, they are the same thing. As long as you have a solid front axle.
Im not sure where the HP 8" came from but those are disigned for front 3rds cause they are reverse cut. You can put it in the rear (technically) but you will be running on the, much weaker, coast side.

That post is correct.
When you spin a low pinion 3rd around, its still turning the same direction. When you spin a high pinion reverse cut around, you are now running on the coast side of the gear which is inherently weaker.

The front and rear thirds are exactly the same, but the front runs the opposite direction as the rear (gears run on the coast side of the R&P) due to driveshaft rotation. They are still entirely interchangeable! If unsure, check www.gearinstalls.com shows ZUK rebuilding front and rear toyota gear sets, and explains the drive sides of the ring and pinions.
