Dual Cases

Alright, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to get started putting in my dual cases....... my set up is going to be the front case geared at stock 2.28, then the second case geared at 4.7, then attached to the transfer case (I know that the stock transfer case is one reduction unit and the case, but I didn't know what to call the second part.... new at this a bit)...

Now, Marlin Crawler says that it's smart to get the 23 spline 4.7 gears for the second reduction unit. However, I'm confused as to how that works, particularly whether or not the transfer case is going to accept the 23 spline output shaft of the second reduction unit.

Also, any ideas on low profile crossmembers/skidplates? I was thinking of going with the triple X member from allprooffroad.

Thanks in advance

I'm going 21 spline, already got it and don't foresee an engine swap anytime some. 21spline is for the 22r/re. 23spline is stronger use in 22ret and v-6. Really depends on what you got and want to spend.

I got lucky and picked up a used BudBuilt Crossmember off ebay for $31 plus shipping, it looked like it had just been slid across a garage floor...

Trail Gears case looks to be almost an exact copy...

All Pro's with the integrated Parking brake would be cool.

The 23 spline is stronger.

You get the 23 spline input shaft for the rear case when you get the 4.7 gears.

You then order the adapter plate with a 23 spline output. the front transfercase will still be 21 spline.

I have 2 21 spline cases, with the 4.7's in the rear. 22re. Its fine.

For the crossmembers, go budbuilt for an easy bolt in, or Frontrange Offroad for low profile.

I wouldn't buy Trail Gear.

To build dual cases and add 4.7 gears you have to tear it all apart anyway so build it as strong as possible and build it once. The 23 spline gears and adapters cost no more. Mine will be going behind my 3.4L so there will be some additional cost but well worth it for the lower gearing and strength. Get the Longfield chromo output shaft and twin sticks options too.

4xInnovations has some nice case mounts.

Personal opinions vary on any parts so do your own research and decide what you want and like.

Good luck.

I have 23 spline 4.7's in the front case, not how I would have personally done it, but I got a screaming deal on a used setup.

x2 for build it as strong as possible once, while you're in there.

Kinda hard to get home with a broken tcase ...

Alright, thanks for the help... it is definitely a good idea to do it once and do it right, so I may just regear the single reduction box and add the second one later. However, If I go with the 23 spline output shaft on the single reduction box, will that mate up properly with the rest for the stock T-case?

Nope, if you go single case 4.7, then later go duel unless you go back into the 4.7 case it'll have to be 21 spline to mate to the tranny.
