deep water help

ok i got a snorkel in the works and i've got silicone in the electrical connections, my question is what else do i need to do to ford deep water? does the exhaust have to come out above the water? and what happens to the alternator when it gets submerged? thanks for the help!

You don't need to worry about the exhaust. If you don't have extended diff breathers, you should get some unless you want to change your diff fluid after each crossing. Your fan could get seriously damaged as well, so I would recommend an electric fan that can be shut off before crossing. Not sure about the alternator.

The stock fan is a clutch fan. The clutch will allow slip once it's in the water so it won't be damaged or force the blades in to the radiator. Just don't go long periods in deep water as the clutch in the fan can overheat. Limit the time limit in deep water and you shouldn't have any fan issues.

Of course, elec. fans are nice and free up power but it's just another thing to go wrong and an unnessasary cost in my opinion. They're not cheap. Plus you have to remember to shut em off BRFORE entering the water or you WILL damage the blades as well as probably the fins on the radiator.

When my alternator got soaked in muddy water it was done for. I took it apart and cleaned and cleaned but it was DOA. I had to shell out $170 for a new one.

Water won't hurt the alternator. It's output will decrease whilst it's wet but it'll dry out and work properly.

Mud on the other hand will destroy an alternator.

Really Lamm? I never made any water crossings.

My point was that if he went mudding or got mud in his alternator, it's OK to spray it down with the pressure washer/hose at the car wash or home. The water won't hurt the alternator. Now, if he goes muddin' and thinks it cool to leave the mud on there fer a few days, chances are, it'll eat his alternator up.

Thoughts Thought Out

I've had mine in 46" of water with no water specific mods without a problem.
