Co2

I hope this is in the right section.
well i got a CO2 tank today. for free, its from a bar, so Im sure it was used to run the soft drinks etc. My questions are:
1) will it work for airing up tires ?
if so.
2) what else will be needed to make it work ? such as gages, hose. etc
3) where could i get these items ?
I never really looked into CO2 before, because I never wanted to worry about, "do I have enough to air fill all my tires" "I have to fill the tank" etc. but this was free, please let me know what i need and where to get it, and where can i get this filled in the Denver area, and about how much does it cost to fill etc.
I know that alot of you guys run CO2. oh he also has 4 other tanks (same size) that he would sell, not sure what he wants for them.
thank for any help.
Ric
almost forgot, heres a pic

You'll need a hose and a regulator made for CO2 (needs to be able to handle the cold temps). You can get them and fill the bottle at any gas or welder's supply place.

Keep the bottle warm. When it gets cold, it's even slower than a compressor IMHO. Of course, since you have a 4Runner it will atl east be in the truck, so it won't get too cold...

Ric - you will need a high flow regulator (150psi) -

You dont need one with gauges unless you want to run air tools, otherwise you can pickup a regulator for around $40.

Home Depot has nice 25' poly hoses for about $20.00.

I think your set, get a regulator like they suggested (again, no need for a gauge readout) and a nice flexy and long hose. I would suggest a quick connect setup (you can get this also from Home Depot) and just get a tire inflator connector and maybe a blow gun (for cleaning off dust and things).

Oh, it costs between $10 and $15 to fill up a tank. IMHO well worth it considering it will last more than a few offroading trips and will save TONS of time over a compressor.

Nice timing on the thread. I'll be converting a HPO2 bottle over to CO2 whenever my lazy (and forgetful) butt gets to a welding supplier. However, I'm mostly concerned about immobilizing the bottle. My first thought is to simply strap it down via webbing in the rear cargo area - but I'm not so sure if that'll make me happy in the long run. Thoughts?

(Perhaps i'll search how people are strapping down their fire extinguishers - though there's prolly a 40 lb weight difference).

sorry for the hijack.

EDIT - NM. search function is nice.

I have the offroadair regulator and metal bracket for the 5lb bottle that I carry with me. I highly recomend the regulator, it works well and has not frozen yet. But if I could do it again I would of gotten these straps instead of the mounting bracket.

I would not recommend simply strapping it down, going over bumps it will get airborn no matter how much to try to strap it down. I personally have a mounting harness that came with my OffRoadAir system. BTW, the regulator I use is from them, and you can get it at Wheelers for $37.95 here or from the store above.

I get mine filled at a fire extinguisher place on Raritan and Yale. I think it's $9 for a 10# bottle.

any welding supply place should be able to fill the tank. if you are looking for a bracket, go to a fire extinguisher supply, they usually have a wide selection of mounts

All the welding places here (denver) exchange the bottle, or atleast all the ones I called.

I have a new Al bottle and didn't want to exchange it for some beat up steel bottle.

Ric, glad you finally made the switch

Cost for a 20 lb bottle at local welding shops- 17 bucks. Get the regulator with guages so you can run tools...you'll be happy you did. I got mine off of Ebay for 20 bucks, and it works great.

Oh, and cold? Nothing to worry about...i filled up when it was 8 degrees out, and it was just as fast. Get a good hose, and other than that, you are good to go...Now go get some tools to go with that baby.

AxleIke,
I wasnt "looking" for a bottle, just happen to get a really good deal on it (free) Im still planning on doing the York set-up, Id rather just grab a hose to fill up tires.
Id like to find someone that has the York set up and see how fast it really is, but Im not in a hurry to airing up tires at the end of a run, i like to socailize when we are done.

ya, i was just giving you a hard time.

You should be able to get a decent set up for no more than 50 bucks witha good hose, regulator and fittings...if you don't get guages, probably cheaper still.

That place refills em. I'd bet most fire extinguisher places do if you want to find one closer to where you live. Wish I would've gotton a 20# bottle though.
