because they are cheap, and stronger than stock, at least in my case.

i can get V6 4.88 3rds for $200 each from vehicles with fewer miles than my own.

i can get IFS 4.88 3rds for $90 each

I buy used ring and pinion gears all the time. Used 4.10 gears are very cheap if not given away. Just be sure it is a matched set. I'd rather spend $200 on six sets of used gears and have them last longer then one set of new gears for the same price.
