best "off brand" tires for the $
I am in need of a set of mud/off-road tires. The truck currently has 33s but I may go back down to 31s. Either way, if you took a gander at my 83 4x4 you would understand why I don’t want to spend big bucks on tires.
Here is what I have looked at:
Trail cutter MT and RT
Kuhmo MT
Hankook RT01 and RT03
Cooper Discoverer
Mud Kings (made by Michelin)
So far the Mud kings and Kuhmos seem like the base bang for the buck.
Any input or other recommendations?

if you can find some trxus tires on interco's site, i love them so far. mean looking, super quiet on the streets, and from what i have heard...unstoppable on the trail. i will be putting them to the test on saturday.

I vote for the mud kings. I have heard great things about them and that they last for a while. I currently run the sport kings (in a 32x11.50) which is the a/t version and absolutely love the tires. They have excellent tread wear and very little noise on the highway. Perform we on and off the road.
The trxus m/t I ran those for a while and they lasted me about a year. I am much happier with the sport kings then I was with the trxus.

+ what they dont tell you is that they up the price right before the 4wheelparts "sale" so it ends up being about the same

Also, Costco and Les Schwab (whose prices in the past were always cheap) are now getting pretty ridiculous.

I dunno. I know the wal-mart in my town actually carries the mud kings. Althought I have heard good things about it. I do not think I would pay $480 for a set of 31" mud kings. I picked up my sport kings in a 32x11.50 for $65/each brand new. I did have a connection on them though.

Though probably a little more expensive than the Mud Kings, I would go with some Super Swamper Trxus M/T's. I had some on my 93. Got 33x12.50r15 for like $130 a tire. Great tire for the price.

this is a line of mud tires manufactured by goodyear and sold to companies as a "house brand" tire. this is wal-marts particular name, they are also sold by big-o tire and at least 2 others that i have seen.
i ran a set of these in 31x10.5x15, pretty good tire for the money, and when i trashed a sidewall, wal-mart warrantied it (pro-rated) and i got a replacement. i have heard that big-o does a full free replacement, but i havent verified that info.

I'm also debating whether I should get the 33s or 32x11.5 (It's only a $15 difference to jump to 33s). I have my stock 4.10 gears (22RE/5spd) and I read a lot of conflicting stuff on here whether the gears can handle it or not. I do plan on regearing, hopefully this spring/summer, but am not sure if I can yet. I also have a 2" BL so that's no problem there. It's just the gearing question... Feedback overall on my situation/questions?...
