Which axle should I use?

As far as strength and stock toy 8" fronts, I've got a buddy that runs 36 IROKs on a stock one with a lunchbox locker and has yet to grenade a birf....
edit: i still think he'll be due for a birf soon, but after that will probably be good for a while...
edit x2: check out the FAQ, scroll down and clicky the link for toyota strength... its got some good info on various component strengths.

If you're debating whether to run a 44 or a Toy, I'd let your desired axle width tell you which way to go. If you want to run a 60... then by all means get a 60.
A lot of people run spacers or low backspace wheels on Toyota fronts to make them wide. I'm not a fan of this practice as it puts a ton of stress on the already weak steering arm studs.
The 3/4 ton 44's will have 8 lugs instead of 6, but you can easily swap them out for 6's with 1/2 parts from a junkyard. The big difference between the 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton 44's is the axle tube thickness. The 3/4 tons use much thicker axle tubes to give the axle a higher load rating.
If I was getting a Diamond or other custom housing I'd go with Toyota parts. Kingpins > ball joints, tons of aftermarket Toyota support, swappable 3rds, better ground clearance, and I don't think anyone makes a Dana 44 axle/u-joint set that's as strong as a set of 30 spline longs.
