I was just wondering how come nobody here talks about running Rockwells here? 6.72 gears, Super Strong, I mean whats not to like about them? Theres a bunch of them floating around down here in the south, so could someone tell me some positives and negatives about running these Super axles?

 

Weight, cost, braking, wheel selection.

A D60 is way more cost effective.

IMHO, if you're gonna go through the troubles Rockwells bring, you may as well do Portals and have way more ground clearance.

 

Well to be truly honest, I bet half the people here havent heard of them..
Not to mention 3/4's of the people here are IFS with no intentions of going to SA.

Noone here talks about them because most of the rockwell talk can be found on pirate4x4..

Positives, Uber low gearing and super strength.
Negatives, well unless you can fab it would be hard getting it under a toyota, and they are reallllly wide, Not everyone wants full width..

Point takin, If i did put them under my yota i would def buy some king coilovers all the way around, the number one easiest way to do it. I guess nobody here really has any use for them except me. I know them jokers are heavy as hell, but to me the strength of them is worth it.
Price wise I can get a set for 2k. Still gotta get a T.case. You mentioned portals tc, I dont think i ever seen one, what are they and where can ya get em?

Actually down here in the south, a complete set of Rockwells will cost you less than a front D60.

The biggest problem is that in using Rocks you just about have to link the suspension which cost the big money.

They are also heavy as all get out. Takes a cherry picker just to move one around or pull the diff.

Toyota stuff is much easier to deal with and a lot easier on the back.

 

Actually, 6.72 isn't that low a gearing when you're talking about Toyota power and the size of tires you need to run to have ground clearance under a Rockwell.

Portal axles are found under Unimog, Volvo, Pinzgauer, etc. Search on here for a build thread by 4Mogger. There is a gear reduction unit at the hub which essentially raises the axle shafts significantly above the centerline of the wheel, so you get the ground clearance of running 40's with only 35's. While they are seriously expensive, they don't really have any other downsides, and, well, the ground clearance - no other way to get more clearance under the diff for the same tire size. They are at least 1 ton (D60) strength, come with lockers in most cases, wheels are not too much of a problem.

What size tire are you wanting to run, and with how much power that you are looking at Rockwells?

True but (and I dont want to get into a "how to build a mud truck" debate) I believe that to be more a function of dumbass hillbilly design and "go big or go home" or "gettin it done" or what ever other single digit IQ mentality that leads hill billys to want a 20 ft tall truck that is good for nothing execept falling over, and getting stuck in mud. And less a function of....well function.

But hey thats just me....

yea there is some pretty ridiculous trucks out there,
though they "function" perfect for the terrain that they were built for.



OH and i agree that Rockwell's would be way overkill on yota, but they are some one the best axles out there. and as for braking, from what ive seen they stop rather well.

 

No doubt about that! cause many people opt for the pinion brake, and those will rip your face off.
