tranny questions

I recently purchased a 2004 tundra double cab. My first Toyota. The tranny is shifting differently than i am used to. It is smooth from 1st to 2nd and shifts a little hard from 2nd to 3rd. Is this normal for a Toyota? My main question is about from 4th to 5th or overdrive. When cold it takes more rpm and speed to shift from 4th to 5th than when it's warm. The dealer said it's all computer controlled and there are no adjustments but this doesn't make sense to me. If it's computer controlled what difference does the temp make? It won't shift into 5th until about 47mph regardless of how long that speed is sustained. When warm it will shift out under 45 when that speed is maintained for a time which seems normal to me. My complaint stems from in town driving at speeds of about or under 50mph.

Thanks for the info in advance. Good forum! Keep up the good work.

I think I can address this one The computer is telling the tranny on purpose not to upshift. This is to get the engine warm faster by holding a higher rpm ,this is for for emissions purposes. If someone can explain it better please chime in

That could be part of it. But if you have some worries check out your tranny fluid. Does it look clean and smell good? If it looks like it has a lot of clutch material in it or is burnt, change it.

Thank you Matt and Andrew. I will check the fluid. The truck only has 2800 miles on it so I expect it to be clean but I will check it just the same.

This is a great forum and I really appreciate all the good info.
