Man, that's a tough one IMO. You will definately get more use out of a locker. But a winch is piece of mind. And it can get you out of messes that a locker never could. My winch gets used a lot for utility purposes, but I'd have to say it paid for itself the first time it got me out of a real mess in the snow. Why not save up a little longer and get both.

If you go with other people, you shouldn't need a winch much.
Get the locker.

If money's an object that you can't get both - first get the winch, learn to drive open dif˟˟˟˟ (yet still have the recovery mechanism) then get the locker, learn how to drive again and enjoy the extra traction.
