so my dad has a 02 tundra 4.7 and the trans (w/ 113,000 miles) went out so we changed it and the only thing that didn't get replaced was the torque converter. So before i get going let me start from the beginning. At first the transmission was just having troubles shifting in to second gear... but as time when on the second gear in his truck just stopped working. So since his trans wasn't working any more we replaced it with an 04 trans (w/ 60,000 miles), well we got it all installed took it for a drive and it was having the same issue with second gear as before, now it would engage in gear but it would do so very hard... so does this by any chance sound like a torque converter to any one????

 

I don't know wether torque converter issues are at the heart of your specific trouble, but it is always a mistake to replace an auto tranny without replacing the converter at the same time with a new, or rebuilt one.
Even when a converter is not bad, and the tranny fails, the converter is loaded up with all the trash from the dead tranny.
Torque converters have very close tolerances between their various stators and impellers, and even small wear of their internal thrust washers and/or bearings can cause problems.
If the wear is such that the converter internals can contact each other, even lightly, the tranny will quickly be filled with metallic fines that clog the valve body and the solenoids, and are generally abrasive to all the tranny components.
Tranny rebuild or replacement without replacing the t. converter is a false economy.

Though with a different trans and you have a shifting issue. I can't see how the converter effects that.

I have dealt with torque converters making a trans go bad. Not in a Toyota but in my ex's accord. Talked to a guy who specialized in Honda trans and he said it was a very common fault with that model. the torque converter would have a defect and effect flow of fluid to the rest of the trans causing the trans to eventually go bad. Not sure if this is whats going on in your case but something to think about

 

I think it was the case so now I just need to get some time so i can replace the torque converter and then once I do it should run perfectly lol ...I hope
