New Tires

Well, I'm tire shopping. What do you guys recommend for mostly street driving but still very capable off road?

I bought the Yokohama Geolander +2's (265-75-16) and absolutely love them. I know a lot of people are running the bridgestone dueler revo's and swear by them, but i really like my tires. Have had them for about two months now. just my two cents

Yok Geo AT+IIs or the Bridgestones seem to be the popular choices for tires with a 50k treadwear warranty. I'm getting ready to buy a set of Revos soon. I had a set of Yoks on my '97 and they were a grippy tire for an AT tire and after 15,000 miles they showed minimal wear, they also did well in the snow too.

The Michelins are nice but no treadwear warranty.

Ive ran Bridgestone's and think they are good tires, but i feel the michelins are much better. have gotten 70k miles on michelins where the most ive ever gotten on bridgestone would be 60. dont need a waranty, although i think they do have one.. not sure though... Have never had a problem with michelin and have ran over some pretty nasty stuff, plus they are great on the road, and on the jobsite- ran over at least 10 nails, that i just pull out and no biggie.

Better treadwear also means less grip on the street so it can be a compromise and I've driven my friend's '01 Runner with the Michelins LTX M/S and they didn't handle as nice as the Yoks but I don't think I would have seen 50k from the Geolandars.

Tato - Did you have the Michelin A/Ts or the M/S version since I don't think the A/Ts would see anywhere close to 70k.

I had M/S which i got a little more than 70...my buddy has A/T and has about 45k on them with plenty of tread left-but takes meticulous care of them, and i just got A/T's and expect at least 60k as they are rated for 60k

I've just ordered some BFG AT's for my Surf, should arrive in 2 days. I had these tyres.... sorry, tires (!), on my Rangie & LR 90 a few years ago and I couldn't fault 'em.

Tires

Sears has a pretty good price on the Michelin's AT and MT's.

BFG AT/KO's. Good, long lasting, all around tire.

I like the Toyo AT's. A little pricey but they are nice. Cooper makes a good, mostly pavement tire for a good price. The Goodyear Workhorse is a good pavement/off-road tire too. I've never had the Michelins, but they seem to be a good choice.

I've always run BFG's, but for the first time last month I bought a set of Yokohama Geolander AT II's. So far I'm liking them better. The tread pattern looks cooler to me. They're quiet and grip well on the street. However, I don't have any comment on wear factor yet. I've only got 2K miles on them.

I would recommend Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO tires, they have been great on our other SUV and are very highly rated for mostly road and highway use, but more aggressive tread than a strictly road tire. I don't have a good idea how many miles you will get out of them, because we just got them a month ago, but they ride better and are quieter than the Goodyear OEM tires we had, and have a lot deeper tread. They should be similar in price or a little cheaper than the BFG A/T.

BFGs cost a bit more than the Revos and alot more than the Yoks.

bias ply TSLs

edit-
for "[limited] use on road and very capable off road" a bogger

for "[strictly] offroad" an agricultural tire or cut bogger.

Very often, the tires that Sears and Costco sell are a lower quality tire than what other retailers sell. Case in point, Michelin XCL/Suv/yatta, yatta, yatta.
Go to any other tire dealer and ask about these tires.

My point is, these tires are built to retailer's specs (insert-Sears, Walmart, etc).
You get what you pay for.
