need some opinions on buying 1990 fj62

Hello fellow Yota Junkies! LOL! I came across a 1990 Landcruiser fj62 for sale with 190,000 on it for $1250.00.
Looking for opinions on it.
It runs and drives fine.
it is EFI with an Auto tranny.
Your average rust around door bottoms and wheel wells, the frame and underbody are pretty clean.
the rear main is leaking (Michigan Underbody rust protection).
it's got brand new BFG AT's on it, about $600 worth of tires.
it was turned into the Toyota Dealer in ann arbor Mich by the original oiwners as a trade in, Like trading in a family member LOL!

It's the tranny that concerns me. if it was a manual it would be sitting in my driveway already.
Any one know about the reliability of the automatics in landcruisers?
My 1st gen 4runner is an auto and just had it rebuilt at 200,000, but I also ragged the piss outta it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Rick

They are reliable, BUT: They go through brakes like a banchy! The brakes are undersized for the wgt of that vehicle. They run pretty good also! I worked for Toyota for over 6 years and I never seen a tranny problem with one of these bad boys, not once, I never touched a tranny on these! The mpg's suck though ! They're a heavy vehicle!
That's a good price! I would not buy it, I'm not that fond of LandCrunchers though! If it was a 4r or truck, I'd buy it in a heartbeat! (My opinion!)
Good Luck!

I would buy it! The price is good, miles are avg. I have heard very few AT problems. The fact that the PO owned it all those years speaks for itself. You can upgrade the front brakes (unless it already has the bigger calipers) and add disks to the rear.

As for your trans, take this tidbit of info: Im working on a landcruiser in my wrecking yard right now (FJ-80...poor thing was hit in the quarter) with 267,000 miles on the odometer. And the trans works like a gem!!! As long as its taken care of, its tought to kill a Landcruiser.

Thumbs up

I would buy it - but the rust concerns me - a tranny can be rebuilt. I personally love the 60/62 series - they are massive beasts of burden - but they are awesome!

Did you buy the 62? All the 62's are automatics and they are very stout. For that price, buy it and deal with the rust issues as needed.
