Depends what you want it for. I would go with a 76 or later, they have the disk front end. those drums have 2 cyls per wheel and need constant attention. If the engine lost power, well you are looking at a rebuild or replacement. Also the 2f in later models has better oiling. the only drawback on the late models is the t-case, but that can be swapped for an orion or an early type. Also Im not big on that chop job, FJ40's are small as it is, with the tub on the back cut off......
If you could get it for 1000, that would be good, use it as a parts truck.

All in all, I agree with the comments above. The front drums are horrible and at times, downright frightening. I put discs on my 71 as soon as I could.
However, my F motor is still kicking butt and it is well over 180K miles. I have no immediate plans of changing it. Same with the 3 speed. I went to the floor from the tree, but I actually like the 3 because it is less work offroading. Of course, mine is no DD - strickly recreational. Just my 2 cents...

The F motor is good, Mine had over 300K on it when I pulled it. The 3spd had the same milage and when we pulled it apart the gears were worn to little nubs, but it still worked. The 2F is slightly better though, more power, better oiling etc...
IMHO after putting in the 350/sm465 stay away from gm conversions. you can get a H41 non us spec 4 spd with a granny gear or the H55 with granny and OD. I bet you could get a 3F motor in there also using the original motor mounts. Yes the motors and trannies are $$$ but it is a ledgend, it is a landcruiser. These vehicles really set the bar as far as 4wd vehicles are concerned, if you look at same model year FJ40 vs CJ7 there is no comparison, the FJ is more modern, more rugged, and far more reliable. If you buy an FJ for recreational use, and have the motor rebuilt, it is likely that will be the last motor the truck will need. I imagine a well restored FJ that sees weekend/recreational use would easily serve you another 25 years. You would probably get bored and sell it first.
For the record, as a shade tree mechanic, I did some work on my first pickup, but I really cut my teeth on the FJ, keeping it running, doing the conversion etc... It was a very forgiving platform, and pretty easy to work with. I could tune the F motor and the 350 no problem, but I still cant work on a VW to save my life.
If anyone sees a 66 FJ45 shorty with the F motor.........
