Might be buying a 94 FJ80

I was just wondering if you guys had any quick things I should look for when checking this thing out. It's a 94 with front and rear lockers. It has 173K on the clock. I've searched but can't seem to find out if there were any problems I should be aware of and watch out for such as drivetrain and engine problems (i.e. TSB's, recalls, common re-occuring problems). It already has a lift via OME and an ARB on the front.
Here's a pic of her:

Check out Christo Slee's 80 Series Newbie Guide. It has info on inspecting a used truck and differences between 80-series model years.

Headgaskets I heard can be a problem. Also check to see when the birfields have been serviced

Whoa, that looks awesome! That is exactly what I am looking for, too. How much do they want for that? Anyway, you will want to check and see if there is an unusually long delay when you try to engage the lockers and try to find out when the axles and brakes were last serviced if you can. I also second going to Slee's site, a lot of good information there. Also check out http://www.ih8mud.com/, too.

Well he's asking $10,900 for it, but he will have to come down on that considerably before I do anything. This is going to be me and my dad's new project for off-roading use(i'm keeping the 4runner), but this will probably be his daily driver for a while as well. This thing is in mint condition inside and out especially for a 94. An accountant owned it and mainly built it up for looks, he traded it in on a newer FJ. Going to go look at it again this weekend and get it checked out by my mechanic to make sure things are looking good. Hope all goes well and I might be the new owner of an FJ, but i'm not getting my hopes up just yet.

I agree that does sound a little high especially considering that this one just sold on eBay for a little over $8000 and it is very similar:

Yeah, maybe a little. What's wrong with it? Look up the value for your location using www.kbb.com and www.nadaguides.com. Does it have diff locks? Any pics?

Jonathan, so what's the report on that nice '94, did you get a chance to go and look it over? Did he come down on the price any?

Well I looked at it, drove it and it's really a nice vehicle, but he's only willing to come down to $10,500. I told him no go. He's gonna have to make it worth my while to have to go to the bank and take out a personal loan for that much money. I'm gonna hardball him, because he has had the vehicle for 2 months now and it hasn't moved and from talking to him it seems people are willing to look at it but are scared off because of the mileage (which is understandable). If he gets desperate he'll call me back, but until then I'm not gonna go out of my way. It's not like it's a necessity for me to get it right now, it's just rare to find one like this nearby and that is the only reason I was interested in it this much. If he sells it it's no skin off my back because when the time is right and when I'm really in the market to buy something else, i'll find the right one on my own time. I'll keep you guys posted.

I agree with you 100% and I would do the same exact thing in your position. I just think he wants too much, as you said, if it is sitting that long he should get a clue. But I guess he is ready to let it sit, so wait him out. Keep us posted...

$10,500's a pretty fair price given the year, miles, OME, and ARB. Not to mention whatever flavor of half-rack he has up there. If it's clean inside and out someone's going to snap that one up -- especially with the lockers.

But...you're in no rush, so...whateva...

$10.5k would be a good price, around here anyway, especially w/ the nice mods, relatively low miles and fr/rr lockers.

I'm not saying it's not a fair price, but he's had the thing for 2 months and it hasn't moved yet, so i'm sure he'll be willing to make a deal soon. There isn't a real market for that vehicle around here as most people don't care about the lift, the ARB, the Surco, or the lockers for that matter. Most people see a 12 year old SUV with a 173K miles and an almost $11K price tag in the window.

Same around here, but the Land Cruiser emblem still commands the premium.
