Help! FJ40 advice
I am looking at getting a 1969 FJ40 but there are several things I am having reservations about. One is the price, which seems very steep for the age and condition it is in, he want $2,200 for it. It does run and drive, but the breaks do not work, he has only been able to get it in 2nd gear (he says because it does not have breaks), it has surface rust on the engine, sides, and the floor boards are rusted through (don't know how much), the seats need repaired, the gauges do not work (so I don't know the mileage), and he has not said anything about the jump-seats. I want to offer him no more than $1,700 is that too high or too low?
Thanks

Not sure where you're at, around here that sounds like a $800 to $1000 truck. Front breaks could easily turn into a few hundred dollars to repair, its often cheaper to put disc breaks on it than fix those drums. You should be able to see the milage unless the speedo cable is broken and it doesn't work. Rusted floor boards can get pricey too. Good luck and I hope this helps, I don't want to put you off one of these great trucks and I'm trying to help.

He wanted way too much for what it was. I want a project but that FJ40 had way too much rust... I don't think anything can put me off from getting one but I know when a project is too big and is going to cost my too much $$.
Thanks for some info though

I passed on one with a ragged engine last year for $600. 1966 fair body but was never registered (Zoo vehicle). Looking back...that might have been a mistake lol.
Wait that guy out, then offer him little more than scrap value if the frame is descent. You may need a part donor in the future. Sounds like the tranny is the worst problem.
brakes = piece of cake, more time than anything
floors = washer/dryer walls work great, usually free

Post some pics of it. Big difference between surface rust, and rot.
Did it have original 6 in it or had it been converted to v-8? Lift...Lots of variables that would change price.

My 1970 FJ40
Yotagirl106,
I am not aure where you are located, but you could take a look at mine. My project FJ40 is a lot closer to done than the one you describe.
I am in north east Phoenix, and if you like I can provide all the details and pictures. It is always good to have a choice! Either way, best of luck to you and your search.
